Just got my Vortex SS today. I never had a nitro car before, and don't know much about them. I read the instructions for breaking it in, and tried to do so. However, when I started it, it was idling very high, but the wheels weren't turning. Then all of the sudden, the wheels started turning, and the engine was racing. It revved up to what seemed to be full throttle, and then shut off by itself and was smoking. The only thing I could figure was, maybe I moved the gears too close together and they could not rotate freely, and then it broke loose and started haulin' ass. I tried turning the idle screws all the way in and backed them out a little bit, and it did the same thing. The only thing I noticed is that the "butterfly" (if you will), inside of the carb, right under the air filter, is not closing. Does anyone know what is wrong? And, is there a possibilty that the engine screwed up from going full balls on first startup?

NEVER start an engine without first checking that the radio and receiver are talking to each other AND paying attention.
With both of them on, work the steering and the throttle to make sure you have full control. If the carb slide is not closing properly, you'll need to turn the trim tab on the radio all the way down and see if it behaves. If it still isn't closing properly, you'll need to check the servo and the linkages to find out why, before you start it again.

Thanks for the help. The carb slide is not closing properly unless I push forward on the throttle control on the radio. I assume this is not normal. The linkage is getting stuck but I don't know how.

EDIT: I tried turning the throttle trim down, it did work. I didn't see the knob because it wasn't located with the rest of them. What a noob. :snooty:

I haven't tried starting it because I'm a little scared. I still don't understand why the wheels weren't turning at first and then all the sudden they did, and it started racing.

Did I mess anything up in the motor, with it revving like that first start?

I think the problem was the gears being too close together, and the idle was set way too high. The motor was a little crooked, so it had a tight spot and loose spot. Must have been on the tight spot when I started it.

Now, it's not getting fuel. It only starts up when I put gas into the carb, it is not pulling through the line. Is anyone in the Reading/Lancaster area in PA on here that could help me get it running break it in and tune it. I do not have a clue what I am doing. (Obviously)

1. Hit the brakes. Hold em. Adjust the throttle stop screw so there is a 1mm gap between the slide and the carb barrel. Thickness of a credit card. Don't stick your Visa in the carb. :hehe:

2. Let go of the brakes. If the carb opens at all tighten up the throttle return spring so it doesn't.

You should read the first two sticky threads at the top of this forum. Good Luck!

The gear mesh isn't the problem. Not until you get it running anyway.

These engines don't pull fuel through the lines. It is fed with pressure from the exhaust pipe. Take the lines off the pipe and carb and blow through the one that came from the pipe. If fuel comes out, and I bet it will, its your needle settings, which is explained in the stickys i mentioned above. If not then the problem should be obvious.

Got it all worked out. Thanks guys. Now I just need to get it tuned right because it shuts off if I give it too much throttle.

Let it get warmed up by driving it around slowly. Then start by leaning the LSN by 1/16 turn in, drive it slowly, bring it to a stop, then see if it takes off a little better. If it does, lean it again and keep testing it till you get a good take off. For performance at WOT, make your adjustments on the HSN.
