I found a game over the weekend that really surprised me. I saw the commercials on TV for this game Prince of Persia: Warrior Within (PPWW). I was like "What kind of candy-ass game could that be?" All I could see was Aladin flying around collecting coins and bananas. The commercial, however, said the contrary. I figured it was just a marketing ploy to make a lame game with a lame title look cool.

On Saturday, curiosity got the better of me and I gave it a try. Holy crap am I glad I did. The game itself is the complete antithesis of it's fruity title. Mind you, it's not for small kids or those that don't like a lot of blood. If you do enjoy violent and bloody swordplay, however, this one is a gem.

I don't know if the style of gameplay has a label. I suspect it's like Devil May Cry, but I've never played that game. Whatever it's called, it works great and it's easy to get used to. You can of course just start hacking and slashing and/or blocking, but what gets my blood pumping is the mind blowing combat moves. While in battle, you can for example leap onto the shoulders of your enemy and either slice him to ribbons as you dismount or bounce off him and take a piece out of another enemy unlucky enough to be standing close by. Also, if you happen to be close to a wall, you can spring off the wall and send your body hurdling through the air in a spiral doom. Oh, and if you see a pole close to your prey, you can swing around the pole, sword extended, slashing as you go. There is also something to be said about having a sword in each hand. There are so many combos to choose from. Which such a long list of moves, it will be a long long long time before the combat becomes old or boring.

Even when the combat dies down, the game holds it own on a set of puzzling rooms where it's not obvious how you to get from point A to point B. You have a host of different maneuvers to get the job done. You can run up a wall ninja style and then grab a ledge and shimmy where you need to go. You can also run horizontally along vertical surfaces (for a short time). You can grab onto drapes on the wall and slide all the way down or bounce at the last moment to find a platform and avoid death.

I've only stated the game and have really yet to see everything that's in store. I trust that what I have not yet seen is as polished as what I have. Everything flows, looks beautiful and fits the theme of darkness and bloody doom that the game exudes. Oh and the sound track is killer too. I guess if you dig blood and violence, chances are you dig righteous riffs and hard hitting beats as well. My only regret about the music is that it doesn't play all the time.

To say the least, this game has really taken me by surprised. I fully intend to play it to it's completion. That per se says something. The only titles recently to be blessed with such devotion have been Fable and Halo 2. I didn't expect this game to be this good. :2cents:

I hate to bump a topic no one showed any intrest in, but I've found something out about the game and thought I should update you guys.

Apparently, it's full of bugs and I've spent the better part of 3 hours of gameplay in a glitch. If you buy the game and then suddenly turn into a black demon looking beast and you can't find the way out of a room, you stepped into the bug.

The best way to combat this is to have multiple saves so you can fall back a little and undo where the bug took place.

Anyway, fun game, but the bugs are a little silly and should have been weeded out before release. :(

I have a couple of hours of play on the game (xbox version) and haven't encountered the bug you speak of. At what point in the game did you encounter it the first time?

I had issues with the first one. I was having problems getting passed a certain point so I was dying a lot. Well the problem was just before this spot there was a cinematic. Everytime I died I had to watch this cinematic over and over and over. Got fed up with it after a while and put it back in the case and took it back to Blockbuster. I enjoyed the gameplay. Next time I'm at Blockbuster I'll have to pick this one up and give it a try.

You know the part just after you get slow time? You step into the time portal thing and go back to the present. Then eventually you drop into a big room with vines and poop. Right there, is a cinematic thing where the big guy in black busts a hole in the wall that you later climb through.

Anyway, I did some saving or something just before I went into the time portal. The guy said "that's weird, it's not working..." but the portal WAS working for me. I didn't have to push any of the switches to step through. When I came out on the other side, I was all dressed in black with a crazy mask on. I never got the slow time tutorial and the big guy in black never broke down the wall. So I bounced around in that big room forever. I could grab the spot where I was supposed to exit, but the bricks were still in the way.

It wasn't until I went on some forums seeking help that I discovered the glitch. The best advice is to make a new save every time (the default).

Oh I think that area of the game is called "Fates Dark Hand"

EDIT:

Little Update: last night I loaded an old save (when I wasn't the demon thing). I went back to the portal and it was shut off that time. I hit the switches turned it on, stepped through, did the slow time tutorial, saw the black guy, exited the room and everything has been wonderful since. It seems a lot of people get stuck in this one spot. Maybe this is the only bug.

I'm lovin the game again. It is huge and will probably take me months to complete as I have little time to dedicate to it.

One last bump. I know this thread is old, but I finished the game finally. I worked on it maybe 6-8 hours a week. I guess that works out to 30-40 hours of gameplay. All of it is beatiful and a lot of fun. Of the games I've enjoyed in the past few months (Fable and Halo2 mainly), Prince of Persia WW really takes the cake for the most fun for your buck. The amount of work that went into this game is just mind boggling. The story is compelling, the action is intense the puzzles are fun and mind bending. There is even a second ending if you want to go back and get all the life upgrades.

The bug at the begining is truely the only draw back and it's easy to avoid as long as you active your time portals before saving.

I'd give it a 9.5 outta 10.
