Oh my goodness!

Since doing all that stuff I have not really noticed much of a difference in my web browsing (aside from the fact that IE doesn't freeze up when I attempt to open a new window), however I just opened up HP Image Zone Plus for the first time and it seemed pretty regular at first untill it popped up all the thumbnails with the quickness. I was pretty amazed how briskly I was able to actually see which pics I wanted to adjust. Definately a big help there.

O.K.

I've done CCleaner, Spybot, and ADAware. I cannot do AVG probably because have Norton and it won't install unless I uninstall Noryon.

Anyways.. the only problem I've run into is that there are some items that ADAware is showing which it won't delete or quarantine. I check 'em, hit remove and nothing happens. Still on the list. There were other items that it removed just fine. The items (9) are under "redirected hostfile entry".

ding ding ding!!! there is your problem. your winsock has been changed.

this would cause IE to run like shiat, if it runs at all.

lucky for you its an easy fix!

strait from microsoft, slimmed down a little for my team here at work.

ignore the first part, they dont list your symptom

CAUSE
These issues may occur if the Winsock registry keys are damaged or corrupted.

RESOLUTION
Step 1: Delete the corrupted registry keys
Warning Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Microsoft cannot guarantee that these problems can be solved. Modify the registry at your own risk.

1.
Click Start, and then click Run.
2.
In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
3.
In Registry Editor, locate the following keys, right-click each key, and then click Delete:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\Winsock2
4.
When you are prompted to confirm the deletion, click Yes.
Note Restart the computer after you delete the Winsock keys. Doing so causes the Windows XP operating system to create new shell entries for those two keys. If you do not restart the computer after you delete the Winsock keys, the next step does not work correctly.
Step 2: Install TCP/IP
1.
Right-click the network connection, and then click Properties.
2.
Click Install.
3.
Click Protocol, and then click Add.

So yeah... that all sounds pretty scary.

its actually not. on previous windows versions you could delete and reinstall TCP/IP but with XP you cannot. you have to delete it in the registry.

i have never had really good luck with netgear.. some may, but in my experience i dont like them.

if you just want your PS3 online you only NEED a G router. I'm pretty sure the PS3 is only capable of G speeds. if you want to go with N so you can upgrade in the future thats cool to!

i would go with linksys or D-link, and both should be readly available at best buy.

the ram for your PC. ameoba says it will handle 3200, but if the stick you already have in there is say 2700.. then the new ram is going to run at the slower speed. It can only go as fast as the slowest guy on the team.

so you have a couple of options.

1 look at the stick you have and see what speed it is. this info should be printed on the label on the stick. get more ram at the same speed.

2 get the 3200 you listed and remove the old stick when you put it in. you will only go up to 1g instead of 1.5 but the machine will be quicker

3 get 2 of the 3200's you listed and put both of them in. (take out the other one). <-- this is the best option if funds allow

all this is based on my guess that the ram in there is not 3200 check that first. if it is your way better off then i expected!!

any yes, do the things in the resolution. its not nearly as bad as it sounds. but follow the steps exactly and if you have any questions at all hit me up. its better to second guess yourself then to bail you out after you make a mistake!

BIG EDIT!!!:::: print out those instructions!!!! once you delete the winsoc entrys and reboot you will have no internet untill you reinstall TCP/IP so you wont be able to bring this thread up to view it!!!!!!

My tower says 3200 DDR. So if I pick up that 1GB I can actually ADD that instead of replacing it? That means I'll have ~1.5 GB?

OK, so I only need a G router... cool. I've read a lot of people are having trouble with Linkseys and PS3's. BTW, The PS3 is in a different room than the router and PC will be. ~20' away and NOT direct line of site.

yea you should have 4 slots for ram, so you can put 4 sticks in there. so yes you will have 1.5 gigs of ram. that is decent for XP but with ram the more the better ( up to about 3.5g then 32 bit windows can't utilize any more then that, but thats getting to technical)

yes your ps3 is only capable of 802.11G so the N would be overkill. 20' should not be a problem, as long as the walls aren't brick or lead lined... my router is in the living room and i can surf on the back patio. thats a good 75 feet and about 6 walls. plus a staircase.

i dont have a ps3 so i can't comment on the linksys compatibility. i just know I've never had good luck with netgear.

i have a compaq 5000 computer with 768 mb of ram. would i beable to just buy new 512mb ram memory sticks to upgrade my memory? i looked a little bit online and says i need 168-Pin DESKTOP MEMORY. is that all the info i need to know? and wheres a good place to buy them? i looked on ebay but am not sure if its a good idea to buy from there?

168-pin SDRAM. You'll want to check the stats on your motherboard to see what it supports, both in speed and capcity. The RAM slots only support up to a certain size so if you plunk in 3 1G sticks and the mobo only supports max of 512 per slot you'll end up with 1.5G ram, not 3. A lot of manufacturers f pre-built boxes cheap out on the mobos so it's worth looking into first before spending the cash.

i have vista right now witch took a major crash so I'm going to up load windows xp i have one but its 2000

I'll never understand why people rush off to the stores everytime Microsoft releases a new operating system. Do they enjoy being irritated and frustrated? At any rate, time to shut er down. I got 1GB to install. :)

Amoeba--- how do I check the stats on your motherboard to see what it supports, both in speed and capcity? sorry I know nothing about computers :\

after i figure out all that info wheres a good place to order memory? i was thinking on putting in 3 512mb memory sticks and i should be good to go

If what I've been told is correct, you won't be able to use XP on system built for Vista. Something about the hardware configuration.

Fast, Better, stronger...... sounds like good stuf buddy!
