As a new driver, it's becoming clear to me that my wheels are gonna take alot of abuse. I've already managed to crack the inside of one wheel while taking out a piece of the lip on another. With that in mind, I figured my stock set of chrome wheels were on their way out anyway. So I painted 'em...
The only prep work that I did was to clean the tires and wheels and then mask off the tires with painter tape. So far, with the exception of a few minor scratches, they look really good. I didn't do any sanding at all. I don't know how many hours this paint job will last, but flat black paint (Walmart house brand) is cheap. If I have to respray, I don't think it will be that big a deal.
Note: about that lip divot - I filled it in with modeling putty, gave it a spray and it looks fine now.
Note 2: about that inner crack - I filled it in with super-glue and so far, it feels solid.
