I bought the "whole" package of ebay; MBX w/ motor(EB c-5) and a starter box(used). I replaced some worn parts, installed radio, added gas, and went out to start my new life of R/C'n. I got my Radio Shack temp. gun and my screwdrive ready to tune it once it started, but it didn't start :wtf:

I think my start box is bad, or there is something wrong with the motor, I don't know which? First I powered the box with a lownmower/ motorcycle battery and tried to start it. Then went for the car battery, still the same result. When I push down on the car to start it, the box motor spins, but as soon as the wheel touches the flywheel the mbx motor pops once then it stops tunrning over. It's like the box doesn't have enought pwr, but it's the one "He" said he used with the car. I tried and tried but wtih the some results( and alot of black rubber griding of the started box wheel). I even tried the hair drier trick I read about, no go. I moved the box pegs around also to make sure that the wheel was not hitting the chassie.
Should the box keep turning the motor over untill the car is removed? Is the car eng. at fault? It's sat for about 2 mon. but I sprayed wd-40 in the eng. ???
The nslhs man said that the car battery should have been enough pwr and seemed to think that it was the motor(he seemed to lean that way after I said the word "EBay").
Anyone with any idea or coment please feel free to give it because this NWBE B.K.S.

Thanks Skuffknee

From what i understand, sounds like the motor in your starter box isnt strong enough to keep spinning after it hits the flywheel. You might have to replace the motor, but that is an expansive alternative. You could have seized your engine or hydrolocked it but i doubt it. When you push down on the starter box, make sure the flywheel is touching the rubber part of the starter box. And make sure your glowigniter is charged. Thats what i can say. Good luck...my friend has that buggy and if you put in a Picco .21, IT WILL FLY!!!

I tried to start it with out fuel in the lines: thinking that it would draw it into the eng., but when it wouldn't turn over I blew into the press. line from the pipe to get fuel into the carb. It acted the same way with fuel as it did without.
The box is orange with the word "UNISTART 2000" on the front, and the handle says "RADIOSISTEMI". Anyone know where that came from or what brand it is? Also no tag or lable on the motor or inside the box.

You probably did this, but make sure it's lined up with the flywheel, when I first got my starter box, it wasn't lined up and I thought I wasted hella money

Make sure you got the buggy on the right way. If its backwards you probably killed your engine already.

up date

I tried to start the car again today and the box turned the motor over :) After a few tries the motor began to come alive. Then fuel started spraying out of the exhaust while I was tring to start it. Then it started and stayed running! That is, until I let off the gas and it died. I quickly tried to restart it but the box would not turn the motor over.... again.
After doing some trouble shooting I found that when the plug is in the motor it will lock-up, with the plug out of the motor it will turn over fine. What is causing this and how do I fix it? Would replacing the plug with a colder one do this? I ask because I didn't know if the plug that I replaced was a "hot plug" or not so I just put in a standard one. Thanks for any help,

sound like your Engine has too much compression for the Box to spin it.. Try loosening the plug a quarter turn then tightening it back up after you get it running

When you get it running, you need to hold the throttle to keep it going? Try tighening the idle screw a little bit till it idles fine. Good Job. Sounds like your almost there! Keep trying. I dont know how to help you-do ya have any pics?

MC88 hit the nail RIGHT ON the head!

Sounds like you got a killer mill there. Probably newer than you think. At least I hope it is.....

When I went to break in my OS RZV01B on my OFNA box (with the biggest starting motor available in a box today) it would do the same thing. And I had to use a screwdriver to pop the flywheel over. So much compression! Yeeeeeehaaaaaaaa!

Skuffknee, I saw your thread about a new starter box.

Did you try to loosen the glow plug 1/4 turn?

I have a pull start on the .21 in my buggy. Holy cow is it hard to pull over. I had to do the 1/4 turn on the glow plug thing. Once it started, I cranked it back down.

You won't be sorry with a nice new OFNA starter box, but if this engine has this much compression, you might find yourself in the same situation even with the new box.

I would try the 1/4 turn before I bought a new starter box.

Rob,
Thanks for the advice. I did try loosening up my plug, but I had to turn it out almost 1/2 to 3/4 turn. After alot of tring to start the car it finally started to hit alittle. It would try to start but never stay running after i removed from the box. So i kept making adj. while the box was turning it over. If I gave it any gas to to try and get it to stay running air bubbles would come up the fuel line from the carb. It must have been sucking the air back in from around the loose plug. Then the started box just quit, I looked inside the box and saw a piece had broke off inside the motor. I could see it through the cooling holes in the motor. So I'm just going to get a new box and if it does the same thing then I'll loosen the plug again and try some more. Thanks again

In some R/C magazine like 6 months to a year ago...they had a big review on all sorts of different starter boxes. They rate them also by how well they handle .21 engines...you might read up on that b4 u buy a new one...if you can't find it I can look in my stash and find the issue
