Hi fellas,

I've been looking around forever at nitro rc cars procrastinating whether to get one or not. So, I am finally taking the plunge cause it just looks too fun. I know I want a nitro monster truck for sure. I just can't decide what kind, I don't want to spend a ton of money at first, something cheap to start with. Was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on a reliable starter truck.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the site. I think a Hpi Savage x would be a good start. Easy to fix and work on, pretty good performance, loads of parts available as well as upgrades. It's pretty durable and can take a good bashing. Traxxas Tmaxx is alright but not as strong as the savage. Go to YouTube and check out the savage, there is lots of vids there.

The tmaxx is going to be cheaper and IMO is a better beginner rig and easier to work on then the savage. But for sure the savage is way more durable.

You will find that spending a bit more up front pays you back later on with durability and reliability. The maxx is a decent rig these days as they have fixed a lot of the weak spots, but there are still a few. If you want to stay on the smaller side, I'd go with a revo. If not, the savage is a heck of a truck for a basher (non-race person).

It's not the truck that will kill your budget but the support equipment will. You need an ignigtor, fuel, some tools,a temp gun and other parts as well. You might want to consider a rs4mt or even a rc10gt to start with. When you buy your next model you'll already have that stuff. If you're still set on an MT than you need a budget of Atleast 500 bucks. Hope this helps Steve

Thanks for all the input, I am really liking the savage and the t-maxx classic. The revo looks sick but seems a little too much for just getting into it. I dont plan on racing either, they will probly be on tracks etc. as I know a few people with mini tracks but nothing too hardcore. I will be looking around somemore to see what I can get. Hope to get one within the next 2 weeks! Thanks again!

The Revo is a much better truck all around compared to the T-Maxx Classic. It handles better and has a bit more power. All you should really need with it is a bottle of fuel and a couple of extra glow plugs. The Savage XL is also a good truck. It will take a real beating and come back for more. I wouldn't consider recommending the T-Maxx.

A lot stems on what parts are avaliable at your local hobby shop for what you want traxxs is as common as the clap.you don't want to wait for weeks for parts when you break.Being new chances are your gona break stuff.:D

I have a classic tmaxx and a couple 3.3 versions and would still grab another classic to bash on if i got another deal... good little trucks in my opinion I got the inserts for the tranny screws and the only problem now is runnung out of nitro l.o.l I honestly can't comment on the savage but the responses are all the same the people that have had good luck with the tmaxx will say thats better and the savage has provaled with others and so on.... What apeals to you differs from others......... They are all good trucks in my opinion and yeah the availability of parts helps.... You are on the right path in my opinion you can't go wrong aslong as you are happy with your choice and you have fun with what you get!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And you will always want more!!!!!!!!!!!!!! we have 15 total in the house so far between me and the kids and my girlfriend.. Good luck and sometimes a mt is a harder beginner a SCT like the slayer slash and stuff like that are pretty durable. Or even a good truggy or buggy Those normaly handle pretty good and you can put bigger tires on them for better clearence...

A great deal for getting in to nitro is the Losi Ten-T (it's a truggy, not a MT, but you won't be disappointed I promise. :)). For $450 you get a Spektrum DX3S, onboard telemetry (saving you some money not having to buy a temp gun right away), built in glow ignitor (saving you the cost for one of those as well), and you get a SICK truck. They are built tough, built to last, they fly high, and rip up the dirt.

It's about the best $450 I feel one can spend on a nitro truck.

I beat mine to death!!!

Yea, I was looking at a few stampede's. I got my eye on a few t-maxx's, revo's and savages on ebay. Most of them look mint. Anything specific to look for on these when buying used? Most of them look to be well taken care of.

I wouldn't get a used vehicle as a first nitro. You could be getting a lot more trouble than you need to. The Stampede or the Rustler make really good first nitro vehicles. Read the Heat Cycle break in method at the top of this forum section as well as the article on new RTR rigs also at the top of this section.

how is the nitro rustler???? I have been thinking of getting one I have the slower electric version to play around with.....are they anything alike or 2 diferent animals??????

I'd get a t-maxx, theres a couple models to choose from depending on your budget, the trucks are upgradeable and you can make them rock solid, a little at a time. Very very fun trucks, I own Four t-maxx's and One s-maxx.

I will have to buy the vxl brushless rustler the girlfriend wont let me upgrade that one she calls it hers now... I shoulda seen that coming.... l.o.l just another excuse to get another one right????? My list is so long I dont even know if I go to the lhs to grab a vxl who knows if thats what I will go home with.. ( I am bad at leaving my wallet with any money when it comes to this hobby and I have a VERY LONG list of wants even though we have 15 or 16 total in the house now....
