I'm just gettin back into the rc game after a 10 year hiatus. I was told yesterday electric is king and nitro is on its way out. How true is this and what the hell happened?!

Nothing really happened to nitro, it has gotten wicked awesome in ten years. I love it and have no plans to give it up.

Obviously, since technology has improved and prices have come down, there have also been major improvements in the electric sector. It's mainly been driven by the lithium polymer battery, since brushless 3 phase motors have been around forever. The technology has become affordable, thus making it easy for people to give up on nitro.

Oh yeah, they're stupid powerful too!

i love the sound of nitro engine, i will not get any electric unless theres no more nitro kits avaliable =)

Nitro is still very alive and will continue to be. BUT, electric has become popular because of the performance you can have compared to nitro. INSTANT power and full speed in just a couple seconds, no tuning either. Also electrics are clean, no fuel leaks and nasty crap sticking to everything. Electrics are also basically silent, which is a huge plus for alot of people that dont want to piss their neighbors off. Electrics, once the initial cost is done, dont really have any more costs, unlike the constant nitro, glow plugs, filters and so on for nitro rigs.

most of the time nitro is powerfuler

Really? Put a Savage X up against a Savage Flux.

I run both. I bash nitro and race electric. Around here there's not really much left for the nitro guys, but it's still fun. Both have their pros and cons, but with the new brushless motors and the bigger LiPo batteries, the horsepower and torque are there instantaneous, and runtimes are extended.

true they have made them more stronger, but i have electric and hated to wait for the batterie to charge. with nitro you can just fill it up and go

I agree the sound is y I'm back with nitro.

Me personally tuning, fixing, buying the nitro. That's all part of the hobby.

That's the other thing. The batteries. I'm a procrastinator and I won't charge the batteries. I am planning on putting the pull start on ASAP.

These threads never go any where. Electric, is for sure a superior rc, in pretty much every way BUT so many people love the smell of nitro and the sound and that keeps them in nitro. If you want more power, instant power, insane top speed, hardly any tuning, a cleaner rig, go electric.

I wont ever go back to nitro but I dont blame people for liking them, I loved them at first too.

My bad. I wasn't trying to start a pissing contest. I just walked into the hobby shop closest to me and see 20 electric trucks and 5 nitro. I was a little confused. I thought maybe economy wise it was cheaper. I didn't realize how much they have advanced on both sides.

I love my 3.3.... But i don't see it ever being able to do this. The brushless power is insane.

Also has a pretty decent write up.

Ehhh...not so much anymore man.....

I will have to agree with you...I have two nitro Savages AND a Savage Flux. Acutally the top speed of my X (Picco P3 ERCM Modded w/ERCM pipe three speed with higher thrid gear are fairly close to the same......HOWEVER....my Flux will get there three times as fast and do standing back flips and wheelie while doing 30MPH. My nitro will NEVER do that.

If you have a few sets of batteries you can run almost forever since I can charge up a set in the amount of time it take to run down two. I am more worried about motor and ESC temps than I am battery life for running my E-RCs.

Someone else said not to long ago that Nitro still dominates in the pro level racing world and because of that drives the industry a little more than Electric but on a consumer level the electric I think dominates because people like the instant power and less of hassle. I own both a like both but I tend to like nitro a little better overall because of the realism. When I dont feel like cleaning a rig Ill take the electrics out lol. Either one is great, just depends on what you like.

brushless motors and lipo batteries seem to be flooding the market

they are super fast compared to nito but the sound of nitro is what got alot of people started doing what we love. i think you have to weight the options and figure out what you want. i have both and will not give up either
i think in my fleet its about 50/50 electric and nitro

you guys are makeing me change my mind about electric. I allways thought that the batts would slowly die and each lap or run would be just a little slower then the one before but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore.

The awesome thing about LiPo, it's consistent power. You don't gradually lose power. When the battery hits the cut-off, then it dies. And if you flip it, you don't have to restart it, or run to it to flip it before it dies.

I love nitro too. Like I said earlier, I bash nitro, race electric. If you're in a colder climate like I am, electric is nice because you can run it in the winter months, whereas nitro is difficult to run under 30-40F, while keeping a consistent engine temp. But in the summer, hearing that nitro screaming past, and smelling the exhaust, there's nothing like it.

I have run both nitro and electric as well as gas and I prefer the electric because of the lack of noise and less mess.

My first rc car was a nitro. It stayed in my garage half the summer. I could not deal with break in and tuning. I bought and electric and I love it. It's easy to start, easy to clean and maintain, not noisy, and it's very clean. I used a nimh that came with the car and it still had tons of power. I don't think nitro will die though. There are not going to be people who love nitro to just stop loving it. I have to agree, the smell is delicious. Just don't drink it!:hehe:
