I could not agree more, people these days find more entertainment out of smartphones and Xbox's to find interest in Nitro RC- Electric RC will probably suffer a blow too. I made a thread a while back that showed how search popularity for Nitro RC has been going down (By this I mean that popularity in the three biggest Nitro RC's (E.G, HPI Savage) as well as just the search term "Nitro RC" Has gone down in popularity over the years. I don't think it will die out permanently, like most things, it'll return (records for example)...

I actually prefer wrenching to runnimg. My biggest complaint about nitro is the noise. Even with the stock pipe on the 3.3 in my Revo it was far louder than the gasser in my Baja. I live in a small apartment complex that gets upset when things get too loud, even during the day or weekends. That pretty much ended my nitro play time.

You wanna hear loud, I have the HPI ripple pipe on my Savage SS, that is one loud ass pipe! :D

Yep, that thing is awful for noise.
That is my one issue with Nitro RC- where I live, the houses were built in terraces, with thin streets, so noise bounces of the walls- it echoes and I can guarantee it pisses everyone off. I do have a park nearby, however due to the weather, it's always muddy- and after spending a day cleaning it, I at least want to preserve the cleanness for a bit :D

Yeah man, base housing isn't the best place to run my LST with a LRP .32 and ERCM end bleed pipe.
 
Not only do I think so, Olds. I prove it on the track every weekend. Electrics aren't better just because it's electric. Use that philosophy on the racetrack and you'll get humbled real quick. I'm not saying their cars aren't bigger, better, faster but very few can beat my Nitros.

How well you drive has nothing to with on demand HP and TQ figures, the two are mutually exclusive as stated above. And I didn't say better, I said the performance wasn't even close. If it was, Tesla would be building the D model in nitro. :D
 
Does anyone know why so many off road tracks don't allow Nitro?
My theory is that it's the noise and the fact that if a Nitro and an electric collide the electric gets badly damaged. I don't know.
I'm sure we all feel the same that you definitely don't see hardly any nitro in hobby stores anymore and it's definitely not being pushed. It's not for everybody but i can tell you that when I show up at the track all of the dads with there electrics get angry because the kids want to see my nitro. They don't notice the torque or the speed or how high they're jumping all they know is that my car is cooler than everyone else's and because it's louder they think it's much faster.
If I was trying to go really fast I would be doing 1/1 vehicles but I'm playing with toy cars so I'm more interested in how cool and fun it is as much as how fast it's going.

Yeah and if electric was so great they wouldn't be using Top Fuel Nitro drag race cars. Combustion engines are way more powerful than electric ones. On demand power and TQ figures don't win races, drivers do. I learned that lesson the hard way.
Add the weight of a Nitro buggy onto an electric motor and you'll have a slow piece of crap. Electric isn't better or faster... It's just different.
Oh and that Tesla is an absolute joke. Bring one to Bithlo Speedway in Orlando and watch it get blasted off the track.
 
Electric guys got sold on some BS and they're jealous little punks at the track who won't even run with the Nitro's cause they're scared. They think they have some 80 mph monster castle mamba monster mamma jamma and can't figure out why they can't catch us. Because it's a lot more than just torque and speed.
The hobby store guy told them that same crap. Oh man, this instant torque, man you can't get any better. Man, strap a 6S LiPo, man it don't get no better than that. It's absolute BS.
I'll say it... Electric R/C SUCKS! (Unless you're a child, it's a quad copter or if it's a crawler)
Nitro RC may be dying but it's the consumers who will get the short end if it does.
 
It would be nice if electric is what got them in the door, but then they switched to nitro. The dwindling availability of engines and companies cranking them out shows not many are switching unfortunately.

Maybe they will make a come back this year... then a good picco 28 will come out again, or some more drop in's for the revo besides just the 21TM and OFNA28.
 
I just get pissed because electric is so popular. I know it's cool that it gets people into the hobby but now the philosophy is "Don't bother with Nitro, it's to difficult" the electric guys bad mouth Nitro all day long. They are the ones ruining it.
They'll say you can go faster blah blah blah without any hassle and Nitro's a pain.
I had an electric guy at the track on Saturday make comment when my Truggy flamed out after I climbed the drivers stand. That must be frustrating he said, I responded, I guess you haven't noticed that my Nitro has been on the track longer than any of the electrics. I just kept fueling it up and going and going. It never broke once (actually I ran two and neither one broke) and those guys spent more time running out to flip over theirs and charging their batteries than I did refiring my engines. Oh and guess what? When the electrics die out on the track they go to the bench, no restarting or refueling on the track. You're done.
Sure I had to spend money and put in a lot of effort to gain the skill level I'm at with Nitro's but it was worth it. And now I realize that all that talk about how much better electric versions are is a lie.
Oh and I think the economy has a lot to do with it too. I see a lot more interest in Nitro over seas. People are buying junk rigs like its the nineties over there and I think it's because we can't manufacture anything competitively over here without charging a fortune. Companies probably look at the overhead cost, see the consumer data and run away fast!
 
Charge and run. That's what they want. They don't want to learn, tinker or be bothered with breaking it in or tuning it. When we had a good track here there were no electrics running on it. ALL the MTs were nitro and it all came down to tweaking and tuning. If you couldn't keep up you needed to tune.
 
Hi Everyone,

I'm new here, as of 5 minutes ago. I'm also new to the hobby. Over the last week, I've been researching Nitro RC online. (Also, I realize that I probably don't know the etiquette of these boards yet, so if I'm posting this in the wrong place, I apologize.)

I felt like this board is a fitting place to ask a few questions and gain some perspective. To begin with, I'm interested in Nitro because I like the aspect of working with and tuning engines. I'm good at maintaining small gas engines and, unfortunately, getting those running just means I can get back to mowing the lawn sooner or blowing leaves. For me, the appeal of Nitro is that I can work on an engine and then go have fun with it!

With that said, I'm hoping to get perspective or advice from you guys. From what I've been reading, you all seem to love the hobby, and to some extent, the nostalgia that goes along with it. That's what I hope to tap into. It's sad to think it's dying before I even get started - but if nothing else, maybe me getting started will help keep it alive longer.

So my main questions are:

1) What would you do if you were me, just starting out?
2) Are there things you wish you would have known, or things you would have done differently?
3) Are there good resources, or a some good starter models that you could point me to?

I'm fairly mechanical and would enjoy the challenge of building. Honestly, I'm more interested in taking my time and building something than I am go get out and get the vehicle running. I think that would help me understand how the vehicle works and would also allow me to maintain it better because I'd know what the parts are, as well as what they do. So I'm leaning that direction as opposed to RTR.

Thanks again for the help. My hope is that even if it seems like Nitro is dying out, newcomers like me will help keep it alive, at least a little longer...
 
I would agree. The Savage kit meets all your requirements and the Savage has good aftermarket support. I have an OFNA, 2 Losi and 2 savages. The Savage X has more run time on it than all the others combined.
 
Nitro can't come close to the performance of a good electric? That's a funny joke!
I love smell and sound of Nitro. Not to mention the tinkering with the engine. That, is also part of the fun. I have only been in this hobby 7 months and I am learning all the time. I have 2 1/8 monster trucks, (HSP Savage 4.6 and HSP Boom wheel) and a 1/10 buggy.
 
Welcome to RCNT. I'm just wondering if you plan on staying with us. You've chosen a user name that will offend many members, and you've insulted every member on this forum who owns electric cars, whether or not they also run nitro.
