Hello

I am New to the RC Nitro Truck Hobbie. I am in the process of Trying to decided what should be my first Nitro Truck? I want one I will be Happy with while I am Still New to the Hobbie, But Also One I will be Happy with Once I am more comfortable with Everything (I quess I want my cake and eat it too) LOL. Can someone help me out here with some suggestion on Brands, and Certain Trucks? I Really want to start out right and not get discouraged and quit. Thanks for your Help. Bobby

Well first off, do you want a Monster Truck (Revo,Savage,T-Maxx,Lst this are some good ones) Do you want a 2wd Stadium Truck (XXX-NT,Jato, RC10gt this are some good ones as well)

Hi Tarant

Well, I am not sure, maybe you can help me there also. I really won't be on many sidewalks, paved roads, parking lots, ect. Mainly in and around my yard, which is about 1 acre. Also, can you tell me, once I decide on what truck I am going to buy, when I go to order it, what else do I need to buy with it, besides Fuel, so I will have everything I need for quite awhile? Thanks

My suggestion would be a savage. Good for grass and offroad use. Has a big block engine to help with the "non track" enviorenment. IMO, small block trucks just don't work well in grass. There's to much drag for the little engines to not overheat on you all the time. The savage is a little more complicated to work on, but there's this forum to get tons of help and advice on it. Once you get used to it, it's not much different to work on than other trucks.

Rush RC Savege

Check out the info on that page for what you need. I'd suggest finding fuel for it locally as getting it shipped is rediculously expensive. I'd also purchase 2 or 3 extra glow plugs.

Here's some of the info from the site:
You will need
12 AA batteries
Nitro fuel
Fuel bottle
Glow plug igniter
(our #914 Nitro Start-Up set is perfect!)

Tools Needed for maintenance
#1 (small) screwdriver
#2 (large) screwdriver
instant glue (CA)
hobby knife
needlenose pliers
side cutters
thread lock
8mm glow plug wrench

Well I like MT they are big, fast and a lot of fun plus they are 4wd. the Revo, T-Maxx, and Savage all need a 7.2 volt battery, you will also need a charger. the savage will also need a Glow-Plug ignitor, the Revo,T-Maxx use a EZ-Start controller that spins the engine over and ignites the glow plug.
The Revo in my opinion is the best RTR their is it has a DVD, to help plus a reciver battery pack and charger, so all you need is fuel and a 7.2 battery/charger. and 8 AA for the controller, the T-maxx also has this stuff but you will have to use 4 AA for the reciver, and the Savage also needs AA.

You will also need After run oil, and foam filter oil

another vote for the maxx and savage. they are proven, hold up well, and if you look around you can find a good used one pretty cheap. this way if you decide you dont like it your not out huge $$$ for something.

what is your budget? ....if you have around $500 the traxxas revo or hpi savage will both make you very happy ....aside from what was mentioned above you will probily also want to buy a couple extra spur gears around $4 each not bad

Thanks Everyone for Responding. This is a Very Friendly Forum. Glad I found it! Anyway from top to bottom.
olds97_lss - Thanks for your Imput, I can use all I can get :-), Is it Really that Expensive to Buy Fuel from somewhere like Tower Hobbies? Because my Closest Hobbies Shop is 100 miles away :-( Is All the things you list Really Nessary? Thanks.

Tarant - Yes, I think I would Really Like a Traxxas Revo, maybe a T-Maxx, but I think they are a little out of my Budget. Any other Ideals without getting me into junk, before I get into that, I would just save up as fast as I can. I already have a few 7.2 Volt Batteries, and a Charger. Where is the Best Place to Order Online, or Buy Used (I'm a little afraid of Buying Used, because I don't know exactly what I am doing). Thanks Tarant.
Hi retarded pilot - I would like to keep it under $400.00 for everything IF I can. I know this sounds Dumb to you, but what are spur gears? Thanks retarded pilot.

everything olds stated is required You can order fuel online, but i find that if you forget to order more fuel you can't run. Also get a savage its an awesome truck and dont think i would ever sell mine.

As for everything I listed, at some point in time, you will need it all.

For fuel, you can buy it in quarts and get it shipped, but it adds up fast. Anything over a quart and you have to pay a Hazmat fee.

Depending on what $ is like for you, it may be more benificial if you run electric.

lods97_lss So you really think I would like the Savage over the Revo (If I can afford either one :-)? I know one of the other guys said that the Reve, and T-Maxx had something called a EZ-Start Controller (Is that better) If you think I would like the Savage better, is there only 1 Savage (I assume there is only one)? I noticed Fuel on Tower Hobbies is like 8.00 a Qt. How much would it be at a Hobbie Shop? How long will a Qt. Last? I know it depends on how much you use it and how you use it, but just an Average? I would Rather go Gas over Electric if I can, just don't think I woud be happy with Electric for some reason. EZ-Start Controller

If you get the Savage RTR, It comes with an electric start called the Roto Start. Regardless, Revo or Savage will be good for ya. Talk to Bruce here on the forum under the forum : RushRc. He can get you pricing on both.

matrix1272, no dumb questions..this is a spur gear http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXFKM1&P=ML ...its the gear that the engine drives ..its a built in weak link so you dont strip your transmission gears ...

you can find some really good deals in the for sale section here on savages ..is you see something you like you can pm a site mod or the admin if they think its a good deal & about the member you can also go cheaper and get a stadium truck like a rc10gt http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXCLU0&P=ML
or a traxxas rustler http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXJG49**&P=ML

there 2 wheel drive, easy to work on & will get you started ....but i think a used savage will make a better purchase in the long run

my vote is still a good used savage or maxx. good stong base vehicles, will keep you under your budget and plenty of room to upgrade or play with if you like it.

there are 2 variations of the same hpi savage rtr & savage ss.....rtr comes built with engine & radio ...savage ss comes with some hop ups but you have to build it and then you have to buy a engine & radio system ..the savage rtr would be best suited for you

Jon2 - Thanks for telling me about the Savage RTR has electric start. I have been looking but not quite sure how to get a hold of Bruce.
retard pilot - Is the spur gear the same for the RTR as it is for the SS? I took a look at the for sale board, but didn't see anything at the moment, and not sure who I can trust :-). Thanks Everyone for hanging in there with me :-). Bobby

If you want a T-Maxx you can get a S-Maxx, it is the same as the T-Maxx but the S-Maxx is 2wd, and has no reverse, all the T-maxx parts will fit it and later on down the road you can get a 4wd module and a reverse module if you want, the S-Maxx RTR is about $320

I'm another one for a Savage. I had a Tmaxx, and even after having close to 1K in hop ups, it wouldnt hold a candle to my savage 25 right out of the box (Was pretty sad, and really pissed me off) Thats the way id go. I absolutly love mine, and have owned ALOT of different Rc's. By far the Savage is the toughest and funnest from the ones I've owned.

Also on this forum you will find some of the most honest guys on the net. I have done many deals on here and 99% were awesome transactions. Theres also rules against noobie sellers, so that has been working good so far to ween out the deadbeats, so keep that in mind.

I know this will piss off the savage owners but I had nothing but trouble out of mine.

Savage 21 one week
body
wheels
tires
differentials (front and back)
clutch and clutch bell
bearings
diff housing
drive cups
shocks
steering servo
motor mount
one way bearing
2 pull starts

by this time somebody wanted it.

Long story short, he traded me a t-maxx, nitro rustler, and cen ct4 road car for it.

I fixed up my maxx with ~$1k in upgrades little to no breakage, many cartwheels, rollovers, back flips, and donuts.

in all reality though, some aluminum parts (braces, bulk heads, roll cage), in combination with some RPM a-arms, you should be good to go.

edit: the person I sold the savage to blew the motor up 3 days later.

I've not had a chance to see the revo in action except in movies I've downloaded. But like others, I've had a t-maxx and upgraded the crap out of it. I just wasn't ever happy with the small block engine. I tried upgrading to a big block (21 size) and then I didn't have anything but constant problems with the drivetrain.

Then I got a savage... I sold the maxx in the first month of owning the savage.

Back to the revo. It's a good solid rig, but runs a small block engine. Like I said, it's a good truck for racing and bashing, but I have a feeling the small block would piss me off in a short while considering a lot of the places I have to bash are grass covered.

For the fuel, a savage has a 160cc tank. A quart is roughly 950cc's which is about 6 tanks. A tank will last around 10-12 minutes of running. Considering most engines require around a gallon before the engine is broke in (at least a quart at really rich settings), it would get pricey fast buying it by the quart.

I buy fuel at $21 a gallon (trinity MHP 20% nitro) at my hobby shop (LHS). Buying it by the quart would be $32 a gallon. Quite a difference.

At tower, you can buy it by the gallon, but you have to buy it in a 4-gallon case. They also charge a $20 hasmat fee.

http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXZV29&P=7
$90 for fuel (4 gallons)
$20 for hasmat
$8 for shipping
$118 total
$29 a gallon shipped.

For me, when I run, I burn about 1/2 gallon a weekend. I run a savage and a 1/8 buggy. Rarely do either break down, so I spend most of my time bashing.
