well we took advantage of the after christmas sales and went shopping for a TV.

We found a sharp Aquos at sams for $994. For 42 inch it was a good price. But while we were there we were browsing the other screens and came across the philips i bought. Oh man was it a deal! Its also a 42 inch LCD but has better response time (2ms) a nice wide viewing angle, contrast ratios of 29,000 to 1. Tons of inputs, built in 30watt amp, and 4 speakers. But the seller for me is that its 120Hz!!!

I got it for $997 and i got a $100 gift card!! (over $100 cheeper then i have been seeing it elsewhere) You can't beat that with a stick! Plus i had just picked up a philips surround sound system with upconvert DVD player, 5.1 surround, and 1000watts, last week!

The first thing i watched on it was "the matrix" on regular ATT u-verse (non HD) and MAN!!! It looks 3D!! Even without the high end input everything looks 10000 times better! I went from a 24inch old crt to this and i wish i would have done it long ago!!

We have also watched "horton hears a who" and "the x files" on the dvd with it upconverted to 1080p. I am VERY impressed!!!

If you are looking to get a new tv check out the philips at sams!! you wont be disappointed!

you want the response time to be low as possible. that is the measurement of how fast a pixel can go from black to white and back to black. basically how fast they switch on and off. the faster the response time (lower number)
the cleaner movement is on the screen. with a slow response time (higher number) you get ghosting of moving images. (like a baseball or hockey puck, or even a person running across the screen)

the next big purchase will be a blu ray or ps3!!

I thought 2ms refresh was pretty fast, most LCDs I've looked at are 5-8ms. I think as long as you get a 120hz set you should be good.

Nothing compares to a BluRay picture, but upconverted DVDs are still way better looking than a standard player.

Beason, I hope your LCD is better than the Plasma I had from Philips. You can read my blog if you want more info. I haven't been impressed with the LCD they gave me, but it's a '07 model and doesn't have 1/2 the features the one you got has. I think yours is a way better version, but I won't be able to buy another Philips product. That surround sound system looks awesome. I bought one not long after I bought the Plasma and have been very happy with the audio quality.

i am very impressed with this LCD. I knew i didnt want a plasma from the beginning. they are to "fragile" and put out massive amounts of heat. If you could get over your philips phobia i guarantee you will not be let down by this one!! the 120hz is the best part!! all the other screens in this price range are 60hz.

I am very impressed with the surround sound. i started with a cheapo rca unit, and it started going crazy on me!! first it turned on on its own at night, and blasted static really loud. then when watching a DVD it started putting out tons of static. so i took it back and upgraded to the philips. I'm SO glad i did!!

i no 2ms is fast really fast i was callin bs on phillips but u never no they might have stepped it up

Yeah, I've been less than impressed with my Philips experience but I think they are starting to get their units up to par. I still like that Sony you recommended, but $6000 is a little out of my price range.......:hehe:
I freely admit I'm a Sony hater, but I will admit they make great products. :)

Wait till you get the blu ray. Horton looks amazing... actually all animated films look amazing in blu ray. Congrats on the good score... we paid $3000 for a 42" DLP, but that was right when the tech just came out.

Response time is kinda like a rubber band. They all stretch it to their needs. None of them tell if the response time claimed is from black to white, or white to black. And there's a difference.

Anyway, I have yet to se a LCD with a picture I liked. They all seem to lack vibrance, and have horrible viewing angles(compared to CRT and plasma), and don't do good with sports broadcasts.

beason I'm glad you like your new TV, and this is in no way an attempt to take away you joy. But I prefer plasma any day, fragile or not. :)

i got a sharp lcd i like it.I hate plasmas 100 percent i dont no why i just dont like them

u definately need to watch like 300 or pearl harbor on that surrond sound

I'm probly gonna end up scoopin me something like this up in the next few months from work.my brother got a 360 for christmas and its on his system and man it sounds great.i believe its why i want one now lol.

The main draw back (IMO) to plasma is the 720P resolution. I think the newer LCDs are approaching the picture contrast of the plasmas, not sure they will ever achieve the same contrast, but they are certainly getting better.
The 50" plasma we had, put out so much heat you could actually feel it. :hehe:

yeah thats why plasmas got like 6 fans in them hot ass tvs to cool them off

Maybe that's what was wrong with the Philips brand, no fans. I noticed that they don't make plasmas anymore, which is a good thing.

Sorry for hi-jacking your thread Beason!
Are you going to hang it on the wall or use the stand?

we have it on the coffee table right now.. lol couldnt afford the table right now. we plan on getting a corner type table with shelves and storage in it. my tv in is the corner so a wall mount would be odd.

yea the heat of the plasmas, plus the burn in, and lifespan turned me away from them quickly.

this one claims 29,000 to 1 ratio, but it also has the dynamic backlight. that helps alot to. when its a dark scene the backlight dims and the lcd richens up to display the dark details and when its a bright scene the backlight brightens up to help with the whites. its pretty cool actually!

lol back in 2004 i bought my tv toshiba cinema series 65" h.d. at hhgregg for 2300 i got lucky b/c their policy is "if we dont have the one you want you get the next best thing for the same price" the toshiba was on sale for 2800 from 3200 and i paid 2300 out the door

Sounds like you got a great deal and a nice setup Beason!

I took the plunge just about a year ago and dropped a stupid amount of cash on a home theater setup. Of course, now I'm all set but at the time it took some convincing the wife unit. I won only because I cheated and bought her a minivan so we'd be "even".

48" Toshiba 120Hz LCD, 1080p
blu-ray player
Onkyo 7.1 receiver
psyclone hdmi a/v switch
Wii
Xbox 360
HTPC with hauppage card (MythTV setup), HDMI out

But I ended up spending more on my speakers than anything else. Full 7.1 setup with top notch Polk speakers.

God I love my home theater. Hope you love yours too!
