Well after tons of questions and answers I had everything I needed to start the break in. The darn thing won't start. I primed it,I put glow starter on,I used rotostart and nothing. After several tries I removed the glow plug, used roto to see fuel spraying out and cleared it. Tried again. Nothing. Roto stops turning and button is out. Grease from roto is all over the front of it. I pull plug out, pinch fuel line to carb, roto till fuel stops spraying out, plug back in and try again. Nothing. I called it a day. What a letdown. I'm using the cheap glow starter that takes a c battery. I don't think it's working. I tried battery both ways and nothing. Put plug in it and no glow. So now I have a tank of fuel and can't even crank it. All help appreciated

Heat the block up so it's pretty hot. Like 200 degrees f if possible. Should start up straight way. If not 200 anything warmer than room temp will help. Are your glow plugs glowin with the igniter?

Glow ignitor is the problem. Using good quality alkalines? A rechargeable ignitor works way better. But the alkaline should do the trick. Use duracell or energizer batterys until you get a rechargeable ignitor. Negative side of the battery towards the top of the ignitor, towards the spring. An alkaline will lose power fast but they do work. Put a good battery in the ignitor and put the plug in it. You should see it glow.

Put a new energizer in. Nothing. The spring is .....wait...the spring is not in the handle...it's at the front kinda crooked hanging there. I think that's the problem! The spring pulled out of the handle and I didn't realize it. I was wondering where the negative metal part was. So I had nothing behind the battery but plastic lol. I think my friend you just helped me realize the spring goes behind the battery. I'm a moron. I had the positive pressing the spring into the metal wand end. Sooo think that's the prob?

Yep. Don't let your excitement get the best of ya!:) Get the ignitor working, preheat the engine and she should fire. We should have told ya to pick up a rechargeable ignitor. $20 and you'll have it forever.

Lmao. IT GLOWS NOW!!! Thanks for the quick replys guys. I fixed the glow igniter and it instantly lit up hot and bright. I'll let you know when I go back for round 2. Roto battery is recharging now.

Well round 2 fail. Glow igniter working now and truck is spraying fuel from exhaust like crazy but won't start. The spur gear isn't even turning while I'm trying to crank it. Took glow plug out and piston is pumping away with no fuel spraying out the top. I'm thinking something is wrong with something. Shouldn't the spur gear or wheels be turning when roto is trying to start? Is it normal for that much raw fuel to be coming out of the exhaust?

Flip the truck upside down and spin the engine with the roto start until there is no fuel spraying out. Once you put plug back in, don't prime the engine. As long as it isn't flooded and the glow plug is burning hot, it should fire right up.

There is a clutch that prevents the engine from spinning the spur gear until it hits a certain rpm. This allows the engine to idle when the truck is stopped.

I cleaned the engine of excess fuel. No priming and it still wouldn't crank. Just spewing fuel out the exhaust, but when glow p is removed, no fuel will spray from the motor any more. Also, I can now push the truck forward on the floor and by touching the spur gear It will stop turning while the truck is moving forward. It feels like somethings not right. I don't recall being able to turn the spur by hand before when the truck was on the floor going forward. I can't stop the spur when truck is pushed backwards. I think something has broken on my brand new truck. I'm not a happy camper. I stopped every time roto stopped, reset roto, cleared motor of fuel and repeated until roto would spin without stopping. Just 4-5 sec bursts. I'm really out of options. Followed the HPI book on this to the T. Most of you know I waited almost a week after I got my truck before attempting break in. I watched so many videos, read the owners m. over and over and as my luck would have it I'm stuck with a non running nitro. What next? Call HPI ? I'll have to get LHS to remove anything since I've not had a chance to even toy with a running truck.:(

There is a one way bearing in the transmission that allows it to spin free in on direction and grab the gear shaft in the other.

So it's normal for me to push the truck forward and touch the spur or clutch bell and they stop turning? Even with throttle servo positioned at wot? Feels like if the truck started running, when it encountered any pressure it would just stop moving forward. Does that make sense? I can push the truck in reverse direction and I can't stop the bell or spur. Seems backwards.

The clutch bell spins free until the engine produces enough rpm to engage the clutch shoe.

When I did the break in on mine I had to lean out the hsn until it would fire. The settings were way to rich. I all so had raw nitro coming out the pipe.

Well,it's been almost a year since I got my X and I gave up last year on trying to crank the dang thing. So I've got a brand new Savage sitting in my house and its never been cranked. Think I'm gonna start trying to crank it again. Just ran across this old post and thought I'd let you guys know just how much of a moron I am. :\

Done be hard on yourself bro, it's tuff to learn nitro on your own! Stay calm and if you start getting aggravated you have to put it down and walk away for a while.

All true. I too am very new and still have injuries from a month ago when I got mine(pull start). If I hadn’t been so determined I prolly would have given up or hired help. I finally got it to run. Burned 2 tanks of fuel and it died on the 3rd during the putt around stage. I had to order a glow plug(no store here) and Taadaaa. It started again. Lol. Then on the next run I was kinda having fun .... and I had a runaway. No problem...I got it stopped with my legs. Only minor damage to me and none on truck. I fixed that problem now.
Btw. A 1/8 scale monster truck will leave a mark on your leg. Ha ha
