New points system for Nascar ??

Nascar is difficult race system to tweak simply due to the fundamental of the sport. Compared to every other major racing series it boasts by far both the largest field on any given weekend and by far the most events. There are sooo many opportunities for things to go the opposite way of the vision.. We'll just have to wait and see.

If you though you seen beating and bashing before then look out.
1 point difference between each spot ,and every spot they will be fighting for till the end. I think it will make it very interesting to see how this changes the way these guys drive for 1 extra point.

I would have rather seen NASCAR completely do away with the chase altogether.

ME TOO!!!

I watched a couple of seasons with the chase and it basically ruined nascar for me, I don't even bother watching anymore.

:deadhorse

Oh get over it already, jeez. Jimmie Johnson would still be whoopin' everybody's ass up and down pit road so in the whole grand scheme of things whatever points system they use doesn't make that big of a difference.

Winning is winning.

No, YOU get over it! So what, you are the only one entitled to your opinion? Really? If you had half a clue you would KNOW Jimmy would NOT have 5 back to back championships without the Chase format, and far more fans would rather see the chase done away with than would want to keep it. I guess you were one of the three fans that like the COT too with the giant wing. Do NOT tell me to get over my opinion when someone asks what we think of the new points changes.

LOL! My gawd your sensitive about this. Relax Joe.

Personally, I still am not a fan of the overall format and I've said that here numerous times when this subject comes up. I like the concept, but do not agree with details and this new change does NOT address what I don't like about the chase format.

and Joe... please don't make assumptions of what you think I might be for or against. Obviously, you've not read very many comments I've posted concerning Nascar on this website, or at least you do not recall them once you've been put into tizzy.

But if you want to get petty about the purpose of this thread... he is asking our opinion of the "New points system"... obviously referring to the new rules laid out just a couple days ago, NOT the rules change that happend 7 YEARS AGO. So with the utmost respect for you my friend I'm sticking to "get over it". Sorry buddy. :stick:

*EDIT*

Oh BTW, what happend to your banner?

I merely stated I would have rather seen the chase done away with over this new set of rules that nascar thinks is gonna fix whats wrong, what they have done to f-up the sport over the last 7 years. So yes, I felt it was an answer in line with the question wheter or not you do. Had you stated how you felt about the rules without telling me to "get over it" I would have no problem, hearing, and respecting your opinion, whether or not I disagreed with it. So with that said, and with the utmost respect for you this will be the last of this I shall discuss with you.

BTW, I removed the banner, just wasn't feeling it after all, didn't like the overall 48 tone to it.

Oh c'mon.. who doesn't love Jimmie Johnson?!?!

Getting back to topic..I guess I don't understand what theythought the "problem" was in the previous points system. Therefore I'm not sure what they are trying to fix. These are the problems with the system as I see it.

1. Chase format is too watered down. 12 drivers is way too many. I personally would rather see 8.
2. The competition at the back of the chase pack always becomes lackluster rather quickly while the race for the chase spots is always a big highlight. The format does not fully take advantage of this to create a more interesting and competitive chase. Bottom line... I do not like a one race cutoff

Your right Joe, they have made a big steaming pile of crap with what was once a great sport...the "NEW NASCAR" SUCKS!

I want the old cars back
I want the old points system back
I want them to race to the finish line when a caution comes out...screw this freezing the field crap
I don't want to see this "lucky dog crap" let them earn their lap back
I want racers to be able to race (rub) without worrying about fines and penalties

I WANT MY OLD NASCAR BACK!

Sorry kids, but I'm with NCNitro. There is no doubt that without the Chase format Jimmie Johnson wouldn't have 5 in a row.
It's cool the new points system is simplified. But is it really going to change anything? I mean they had bonus points for leading a lap and leading the most laps already. Now why do you single out 3 points for winning the race? Yeah, I guess it again puts more emphasis on trying to actually win.

But frankly, the points structure isn't the issue. And it won't change the nature of the sport. When one driver has won 5 of 7 championships since the Chase has been implemented, it pretty much confirms that the Chase format is crap and frankly it makes the whole thing suck. I've pretty much given up on NASCAR. I only watch Daytona and Talladega cuz I like the Super Speedways. But unless there's something interesting this season, I'll skip it again.

Bring on Formula 1!

Hell YEAH! Preach on brother! That just nailed it on the head, great post Pete!

Thank you Jeff, I know I am not the only one who realizes this. and for this reason I will NEVER consider JJ the caliber of driver Petty or Earnhardt were, even if he does break the 7 championship record.

Not really.

I'm kinda looking at it like they are just new rules, not necessarily better rules. We're still going to end up with 7 lame duck chasers in a post season that spans over 1/4 of the entire season.

They are not fixing the fundamental problems with the format. At least I don't think so.

Let's face it. It ain't going away, but they could make it better. They try, but they're focus is on a different agenda than mine. I think the new points system will bring the competition closer... but... is that necessarily fair? I've always liked that there was a larger points span between 3rd place and 4 place rather than between 33rd and 34th. That just makes sense to me. I think it'll be a closer points battle, but less fair.

Ok, see now the more I think about it the more aggravated I become. I'm not digging this new points system too much from a fair competition standpoint. But... what's even bigger is that this change is aggrvating a problem that Nascar has had for the past seven years.. and that's the loss of their old school customer base. You fellas are annoyed because of all these changes, some of them good (IMO), some of them not so much. However, with this change here the system is sooo different from the old school system that it is no longer recognizable to the older fanbase. I think one of the worse things a company can do in marketing their product is to change it's packaging so dramatically that their customers can no longer recognize it. That is essentially was Nascar has done. I'm not a fan of it.

Nascar needs to recognize the dramatic difference of opinion between the oldschool base and the newschool base. If they want to create an entertaining (yet fair) system they need to meld what both parties find exciting AND fair about both systems. The better answer is out there, they're just busy answering the wrong questions.
