New to this forum. Used to have an RC car way back an HPI Firestorm nitro car. Recently I've been wanting to get back into it but go the electric route. Been doing research a little unsure if i want to go off road route or drift route and what models are great to upgrade or have good potential to upgrade

There's a huge difference between off-road and drifter, though it's entirely possible to convert any 1/8 eBuggy inro a drifter making that the most versatile platform by far in terms of setup options, tire selection and wide range of classes you can convert with the aid of DeltaPlastik bodies:
https://deltaplastikusa.com/collections/

Here's an example of a 1/8 Drift Car that was converted into several different classes:

Once you figure out what class you want to get then we can hone in on some brands to consider.

I would encourage you to consider a race grade brand to be assembled as a kit. It will be more expensive up front, mostly because race grade kits already include all the hop ups which will save you money in the long run. Most RTR brands take too many short cuts forcing you to buy twice and ultimately spend more money than if you simply bought a kit in the first place, doh!

Another huge selling point is that when you assemble the kit, you will already know how everything goes together making maintenance phenomenally easier when it's time to rebuild the car.

Any chance you're a veteran? Some brands offer a military discount like TEKNO:

TEKNO also offer a 50% lifetime warranty making them arguably the least expensive brand to maintain on the market:

If money is no object then I'm more partial to HB Racing and have a build thread here to give you an idea of what the assembly is like for a typical 1/8 eBuggy:
https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?4192321-BUILD-REVIEW-HB-Racing-E819RS

HB will be easier to go back and forth between a buggy and drifter because they offer a RGT8e option as well:

If top end quality isn't important than the Exceed I referenced above will certainly gitterdone, just realize that you will get what you pay for so expect to have to make some upgrades to it.

Just take your time and feel free to ask lots of questions!

Welcome! :)

What kind of terrain do you have available? It might help you decide what kind of rc to get. Do you have any big smooth parking lots around, or dirt fields? I kind of sucks when you get an rc you really want and find out it's hard to find a place to run it. Just something to consider. Or just get both. 🤣

Welcome! Whichever direction you go always remember to have fun.😁
