Thanks for the advice. I'm not a Traxxas fanboy by any means, but I certainly can appreciate their designs from a beginner basher standpoint. I started with an Arrma BLX 3s and moved on from there, but I think a brushed 2wd traxxas model would have been more appropriate. The traxxas vehicles are lighter, and at least in stock brushed form, not fast enough to do any real damage to themselves. And replacement parts are affordable.
If you get a TRX 2WD for him grab a BL-2s. I had a XL-5 Slash starting out and I spent way too much on new brushed motors

I've heard mixed reviews about the BL-2s. Don't need anything overpowered, but I do think having something responsive/intuitive will make for a much smoother learning experience. I would be inclined to get the XL-5 since they are cheaper, and then throw in a cheap HW system down the road. But if the BL-2s provides a decent driving experience, that is probably cheaper in the long run.

I race the titan brushed motors for carpet spec slash, and they seem to hold up ok there. But I can seem them failing early and often if used outdoors.

For someone just starting out they don’t need a perfect throttle response 🤷‍♂️

the best way to make a 12t titan last is to break it in with the cup of water method before you even run it. Little blast of air duster in the end bell from time to time to dislodge build up goes a long way as well.

In the past I used to run them because they’d have way more power than similarly speccd brushed motors until I finally hit the bullet on brushless and never looked back.

Way I look at it now though, brushless motors are so cheap and between gearing, turning down throttle dual rate/training mode, etc. You can control their power output for the youngins and spend less in the long term once they develop some skills and become better drivers.

I agree…

The bad throttle response on the bl-2s systems is still leaps and bounds better than the delay that cheaper MJX and Hosim cars come with. Most beginners don’t even realize it’s there. 😂

I agree, don't need perfect. But on some cars I've driven the delay between pulling the trigger and the car actually applying throttle was SO BAD. I just don't want him to get discouraged because of crappy equipment.

Noted! I'll probably give it a shot then.

Agree, but a TRX BL-2s won’t be like that.

Nothing better than to beat a high priced rc with a budget priced one, i say work with it and enjoy the improvements..
I never ended up winning, although it actually handled quite nicely towards the end there. But, that wasn’t the purpose. I learned more about setting up a car in the first week than I did in 15 years on and off in this hobby. I got to apply pretty much every tuning aid I learned as well as modify some things to add tuning aids it didn’t have. All my cars handle significantly better as a result of my little pet project… I’d consider it a success. 😁
