Ok I just got the new Dell Inspiron 8600. This thing is pimp status. First off it has a 15.4 inch viewablw WIDE screen, yes wide screen! I am running the new Pentium M 1.7. The new Pentium M's need to be mulitplied by 1.5, so in benchmark testing this chip was fater than a P4 2.6. It has a gig of DDR wich is 333mhz. I got a 40gig Hard drive. It has a built in 54mbs wireless network card. Video is the new amazing Nvidia Gefore FX 5700 go. That card is 8x AGP with 400mhz RAMDAC's 64 MB of DDR that can handel safely 550mhz. This has to be the most amazing graphics I have seen on a laptop It has the ultrafine WSXGA+ lcd screen and I can actually see the screen from any angle, even the sides it awesome! The FSB is 533mhz. I have to say all this was obtained for about $1500 so I cannot think of a better time to get a laptop, I mean these things are as powerful as fullblown desktops now! and they don't cost 3-4k

wow.....well, um.......my laptop can play solitare. lol - nice bro, real nice....mine is no where near that magnificant, but you can't beat the price!

Shoot to be honest I would not have it if my company didn't buy it. Who spends that kinda money on a PC, I guess I am jaded because all my PC's for the last 5 years have been paid for so I am a cheapo when it comes to actually breaking bread myself for them. It also has a CDR\DVDR combo drive in it.

It was a little under $1800 bucks with tax and shipping. For my job I had to get MS Office Pro and XP Pro, if you got the Office basic and XP home you could save around $300+

My company can hook you up, but it requires you to know a lot about computers and networking, ooh and there are those 60 hour weeks you have to work all the time. Let's just say I am very deserving of this laptop.

LOL - more deserving than the one that error gave me, lol. But hey, the one he gave me so far has been perfect, and i love it, even if it is a bit old.

I gotcha beat I think... My new laptop is sopose to be at my doorstep tomorrow..:contract: Its a dell inspiron 600m.. intel pennium m processor 1.4 ghz, 512MB, 60GB harddrive, 24X CD-RW/DVD Combo Drive with Sonic RecordNow, but only a 14.1" display... well see how it is tomorrow...

Heh... your company looking for an Oracle DBA with 4 yrs experience and who used to be an Unix Admin for almost 6 years before?
Contract jobs are fine, i don't need permanent employment.

Hey Scummer - do you know anything about SAS70 certification and everything it takes to get there and maintain it????

Even though you are in Indianna I may have a home for you in Omaha Nebraska.

I'm currently working with Deloite & Touche on becoming SAS70 certified. Believe it or not, I'm almost there. All the Intrusion detection software is done and now I'm down to more documentation and symantical type issues. I was just shocked we had most of the groundwork already covered!

P.S. - Humboldt - GREAT pick on the laptop bro! Congrats!

Seriously. I have a Vaio GRX500 with the 17" screen, and I got to the point where it was a pain to lug around. I mean, I really like that laptop, but it's big, and heavy. So I went the other way and got a 12" Powerbook G4. It's about the size of a book, is about an inch thick, has a CDWR/DVDRW, 40Gb HD, GF 32MbDDR, 512Mb DDR, and a 1Ghz G4 proc. Firewire (6 pin), USB 2 (2 ports), DVI and dual monitor interface capable and runs OS 10.3. Integrated 802.11g and bluetooth also, and is housed in aluminum. battery life is about 3 hours with the BT and ether turned on, 5 hours with them off.

The new trend in bigger laptops is nice in a way, but lug them around alot and you'll know where I'm commin from.

HB, you got a sweet laptop, don't get me wrong. And it is really nice to have one that is comparable to a DT and can keep all your info with ya and not be tied to one spot. Get a packpack bag, it'll save strain on the sholders.

Yeah i agrre, but this laptop is bigger than my old Inspiron and is about half the weight.

sweet. my GRX was based on the P4 and not the M version. The battery weighed a bunch though.

Hmm... i actually took a 500 level graduate class in advanced network security just last semester (i aced it :D ), but i have never heard about SAS70 certification.
But learning new software or hardware is the smallest problem, getting my foot into the door is the bigger one.
