Hey all, I'm new to this board and I have a quick question. I can't get any after run oil (don't ask) so can I use WD40 for after run. I don't use anything right now, would it be better then nothing?

i think wd-40 is alright because i was reading an afterrun procedure and they say to use wd on the inside of the engine and on the inside of the carb.

You can use WD40 for now. Just soak the element, then ring it out real well. You could even use a motor oil temporarily. Just use a tiny bit, & rub it in good. I would suggest getting some ARO though...

ok thanks a bunch man! Going out to bash in a little while.:breakdown

a really good alternative for ARO is marvel mystery oil. You can pick it up at pritty much any hardware or automotive store

yup I have read that WD-40's main function is to prevent rust wich ARO does as well. I would make sure you use a compressor or compressed air to blow out the excess as this can hinder you from starting if too much is sprayed in there. You can actually "hydro lock" it with too much. I still recommend the ARO. My rule of thumb is if the engine won't be run for more than TWO days then I go ahead and add a couple drops down the piston and sleeve. Then just cycle the engine by pulling the pull start or turn the flywheel. That alone will help your mill last longer. :read:

Ya know what why didn't I think of that. I knew that too. Just from consistancy alone I should have known it was ARO. This is an age old topic that will be brought up time and time again. Traxxas says wd is fine. ARO is honestly what ya want though. It's better than nothing at your current time.

well I did my first one today. With WD40. I did the pulls while the plug was out. Was I right in doing it that way or would it circulate better throught the engine with the plug tightened all the way down? I sprayed some in with the carb at WOT and then some with it at idle. BTW, I did the pulls after I shot it in those to places. When I shot it in the carb I worked the throttle a bit to kinda get it worked into the carb body maybe. Please let me know if I did any part of the procedure wrong. BTW I run it about every 12-24 hours;)

You should be fine. I wouldn't worry as long as you clean the exterior of the engine BEFORE you remove the plug. You should get ARO. It is more convenient then lugging a can of WD-40

What do u mean by the exterior? I'm suppose to clean the outside too???? I don't really know what u mean by "lugging" either, the can I use is no taller, and even slimmer than the engine..... How big is ARO? Like air filter oil bottle sized?

A bottle of ARO is much smaller than a can of WD40. You can use WD40 to clean the outside of your engine which you should do once in a while maybe not after every single run but should definately be done. It will help it run cooler in the long run that way. Umm just get some aro you will be better off in the long run.

I just use brake/carb cleaner for the outside of the engine, careful of course not to spray rubber components or in the engine, stuff is cheap. Then I use Marvel or a 3 in 1 mineral oil for afterfun.

You HAVE to clean at least the area around the glow plug before you take out the plug. If you do not you are at serious risk of letting dust, grit and other bad stuff fall into your engine. I allways use several blasts from my compressor.

What he said. I meant that but didn't write that. Sorry.Lol. Also "lugging", I mean carrying a can of WD-40 suck. ARO is more convenient and easier to store.

I know wat u meant but I'm just saying it's not that big of a hassle for me. I don't have an air compressor either. Wish I did. So yesterday I took off the head and the glow plug holder and gave them a good wash down. Nothing is wrong with the piston/sleeve yet, not dirt in there. But I had a small problem yesterday. It ran a lot hotter than before I put in the WD40. I didn't put very much in either. Just 1 small squirt in the carb and piston/sleeve. I had to richen it quite a bit to get it to normal temps and it didn't go fast at all. Could the WD40 cause that? When I first started it up I could tell it was burning some of it off yet cuz it stank and it quit. But it was running real good after that, but when the temp read came up it was about 16* over the limit.

What do you mean by 16* over the limit? What is the limit? Maybe your head was not tightened all the way down . I am thinking that you may have an air leak.

the limit for the M-16 is 260* Maybe I didn't have the glowplug all the way down because that's the only thing I unscrewed in the first time I sprayed WD40 in it. I'll have to run it today and make sure the plug is all the way down and I'll come back with some feedback.

ok it's running super rich so it has like no power! I have a question though. It says the limit is 260, but it's a lot warmer outside now, and that's exactly when the temps jumped! Can I go higher than 260* in like 70* weather?
