Hi, all. New guy here. I had an Apprentice S15e several years ago and then quit flying to pursue other interests. I took it out for the first time in several yaers and managed to auger it in and pretty much destroyed it. I just bought a new Apprentice STS BNF, thinking the old DX5e transmitter would work but apprently it isn't compatible with all the new features on the STS. So, I'm grounded until I get this sorted. Any advice on reasonably priced transmitters would be appreciated. The DXS is the transmitter supplied with the RTF planes but maybe there is a better choice? This is my only aircraft and I have no need for lots of channels, just the 6 reqiured of my plane.

Thanks and looking forward to becoming a useful part of the community.

Welcome, did you by any chance keep the electronics from your old apprentice, it would be an easy swap. New radios get pricey.
Yes. I still have the broken airplane. But I have a GPS module onbaord and I'm pretty sure the receiver for the DX5e wouldn't work. I am thinking about just getting a used DXS on eBay and be done with it. I am thinking it can't be too bad if E Flite uses them on their RTF planes. I was really shocked at the price of transmitters when i was looking around! Many of them cost more than the plane... :)

Thanks for the reply.

Let us know how it go's. I hate to see you grounded when you've got the itch to fly and can't scratch it.

Thanks, man. Yeah...I'm itching to fly this little beauty but I'm not risking another crash. Trying to push ahead with the airplane not reacting as it should as far as the indicator lights go, according to the manual, makes me a little nervous.

I'll be gone for a week on a trip to Nevada but I will let y'all know how things turn out.

One thing I will suggest is take a look at Radiomaster radios. They have a 4in1 module which is able to bind with nearly every Rx out there. And they are cheap, with tons of features, and ridiculous range and latency.

Now, they are a very complex radio, with all kinds of logic commands you can program into them for channel mixing, custom routines, etc. They use various firmwares like EdgeTx, which is open source, meaning there is a large user community out there updating and creating new features for it, and the EdgeTx leaders in the community are constantly communicating with the community and implementing these ideas and changes.

I don't fly, so I am just giving you something to look into, but I was into drones, and I will say the community is awesome. You can download Discord and join the channel if you like, and there are gurus there that will answer any questions you have.

Thanks for the tips. I really appreciate it.
My interest is too casual to get into programming and all that complexity. My skill level at this point warns me that fiddling with control rates and mixing is a really baad idea. :)

Well that's the thing. That stuff is all optional. If you just want a simple control setup, you basically just setup your model, set which channels are tied to which controls, set your limits, etc. That part isn't much more complicated. I just thought of Radiomaster because the price is really good. Watch some vids on setting up a model. You might be surprused.

I'll do that. Thanks.

If you're able to return the BNF and get an RTF model, another $50 for the included DXS is worth it.

In my opinion, buying a new DXS by itself wouldn't be worth the price tag, you're most of the way to another plane that includes one. If you're not planning on buying more planes, there's no need for a fancier radio either, so you're in a bit of a conundrum with the BNF STS.

You should be able to find a lightly used DXS for cheap, probably from someone who bought an RTF and then upgraded to a higher end Spektrum radio and has the DXS extra now.
