OK.

I just installed 2 new drives in my computer.

A CD drive and a DVD-RW drive.

Hardware installation was simple.

Here is where it turns to poop.

On start-up I get an error message that reads;
Secondary Drive 0 not reconized
Secondary Drive 1 not recognized
Strike F1 key to continue or F2 to run set-up

I strike F2 and the menu reads;
Secondary Drive 0 ... Unknown Device
Secondary Drive 1 ... Unknown Device

When I select either one, the only options are either Auto or Off.

I leave them on Auto and continue with start-up.

After start-up is complete I check the device manager and there are no CD or DVD drives listed at all.

It won't let me install drivers because the computer says the devices are not present.

Both drives open and close so they are getting power. These are also replacement drives for existing CD and DVD drives. The last time I did this, XP installed the driver automatically upon start-up and everything was fine.

I am ready to put the old drives back in and throw the new ones across the street.

Anybody have any ideas WTF is wrong.

All I did was unplug the old drives and plug in the new ones.

I will shut down and open her back up and make sure they are set correctly.

Be back in a little bit.

Ed, you da man.

That was the problem. The jumpers wer both on slave. I moved them both to cable select just like the original drives and everything works fine.

Drink on me for you in Reno. :thumbup: :thumbup:

Did you set the jumpers on the drives so one is a master and one is a slave?
I agree. Make sure that you have the correct one set to master and slave. Only one can be either.

I think Eddy nailed it. In systems pre-ATA/133, you had to set the jumpers to Master and Slave, and you had to make sure they were on the right connector.

Nowadays, all you have to do is set the jumpers to CS (Cable Select), and use an 80 conductant ribbon (has smaller lines/is thinner). This ribbon would come with the DVD drive, because it allows for a MUCH higher data rate.

It is also known as a UDMA cable.

That should enable the drives to be used.

Learn something new everyday.
