have the stock 540 motor and only 18,300 rpm. I know this is not good and I need more revs, so I need to find at least 30k out there. Need to know of a good motor for a replacement that does not drain the batteries too quickly. I noticed the losi desert rat is rated @ 33k?

Since am getting the 23oo bateries I was thinking of getting some more revs for the Avante 2001 by changing the stock 540 rs motor that only has 18,300 rpm. I want something in the 30k range with the newer tech.

Well you will need to find out what size motor your ESC can handle. The lower the turns of the motor, the more powerful. A 17 turn motor is stronger and a 20 turn motor, etc... So find out the lowest turn motor that your ESC will handle, if you don't want to replace the ESC.

Right around 30k, I'd say you'd want around a 17 turn motor. You will have to look at an ESC capable of running 17 turns or less.

However, when it comes to max runtime vs rpm, you may want to go with a low Kv rated brushless setup. You can always dial down the throttle endpoint on your radio to get the desired speed.

Your right about the esc as mine is a stock futaba 2001 vintage? I am looking at brushless as they are available for @$60, and brush is about $30, so the difference is not that much. There are some low volt brushless out there that would not require a new esc, but the rpm would be low as well. This system would be good for longer run times, as that is my main goal. I would need to get another ride if I went li-po and high rev brushless setup.

You can not run a brushless motor on a brushed motor ESC the only way you can do that is if you have one of the newer ESC's that will run both brushed and brushless motors your vintage Futaba ESC will not run a brushless motor. It is best to buy a brushless ESC and motor combo and make sure that the ESC you chose can be used with more than one brushless motor that way down the road you can change to a faster brushless motor or one that soots your needs beter....

Exactly as abadk9420 said; you cannot mix brush and brushless. The key reason is that one has two wires (brushed) and one has three (brushless) or more (if it's sensored).

The Futaba ESC is pretty old. I don't think Futaba even markets any ESC's nowadays (or do they?). If you do upgrade your motor, I'd recommend upgrading the ESC. If you do that, it might be worth it to take the plunge to go brushless. You can always dial down the speed by turning your EPA adjustment down on the throttle.

I can't see investing that kind of money in this old car, but would do it on a new one!

if you are intrested, i have the stock electronics from my e-firestorm. HPI SC-15 ESC and a 15T motor. you will need to solder your own plugs on for the battery and motor. Its just sitting in my desk waiting to be sold or turned into a dremel. :)

I have decided to not upgrade this car as it is quite old and I would be pouring money down the drain. I guess my next step is to acquire something newer that can handle some real power. Those brushless systems need to come down in price!

The new Sidewinder setup by Castle Creations is only like $140 which is a great way into brushless tech. Still a fairly decent chunk of change, but look at how much money you'll spend on a newer car PLUS all the stuff to get the speed you want. IMO, there's nothing wrong with putting that kind of money into an old car because whatever setup you buy will be 100% compatible with any new vehicle you may acquire in the future. If you're lookin for more speed I say go ahead and buy some. If want to put it in a newer car down the road there is nothing stopping you and you havn't wasted a dime unnecessarily.

Believe me, brushless is awesome. Practically zero maintenence on the motor, other than dusting off every now and then. I put one in my RC18B... It's one of my favorites, since it's just charge-and-go.

I love me some brushless. I put one of the sidewinder systems into my RC10 T4 race truck, with LiPo of course. Then I bought brushless for the micro t, then I bought a brushless Novak Goat crawler system, then I bought a Mamba Max 6900 brushless system which I later bought a Stampede to have something to put it in, And I just bought a Novak HV Pro 4.5 brushless system today for my Revo brushless conversion. I guess you cuold say I'm a fan of brushless. Three months ago I wouldn't even talk about electric, just nitro for me. Until I realized the reality was that for racing it's a much more powerful system than a lot of the nitros out there because of the power to weight ratio. It's also VERY consistent compared to nitro. From now on, its gassers and juicers only for me. I'm done with nitro for a while. It's fun, but nothing like the chest thumping power of a baja 5b SS.

yep. my latest is the novak GTB/velociti 3.5 setup in my TC5. one melted diff, 2 blown out tires, and a popped front belt later, i am a happy camper.

I've already gone up from a 17 to a 21t pinion on my TC4 and it still melts the tires in less than 3 packs......I'm running the Mamba Maxx in it.....B/L setups are sick.....platgof if you are still interested I have some ESC and motors I'll sell ya cheap....good stuff no crap....PM if you're interested....

I picked up a super deal from charlies the man that just rocks! I has no idea that this kind of power existed in electrics. The motor is a 11/2 turn hand wound motor that is adjustable. I am doing my best to keep it straight on the street, and my son's mustang is chump change up against this beast!
