RC Driving Style
I am new to the forum and I am looking for help! I recently purchased a Kyosho GP Alpha 3 w/GX-15 motor. My motor blew a piston on day one! Curios to see what was wrong I disassembled the engine only to find that some how my piston pin broke in pieces and the piston itself was beaten to a pulp! I was wondering if anyone know's where I can get replacement parts for the motor, such as a new cylinder and piston assembly along with a piston set. I was also hoping someone could tell me how to replace the GX-15 motor with a better motor that doesn't require a major modification!
 
Do you have a manual for the engine? Towerhobbies.com has a piston and sleeve combo with the manufacurers part # of 74521-02 for $21.49. Just search "GX" and you'll find alot of parts. As for the replacing, you ought to be able to use any .12-.18 engine. Just mack sure it has the right kind of crank shaft.
 
kjoin001 - that engine **should** still be under warranty regardless of abuse.

Abuse you say? I'm guessing you're new to nitro - if not - apologies in advance. :D But see the following checklist:

1. Did you read you manual?
2. Did you run a proper breakin procedure per the manual specifications?
3. Are you sure the engine was running rich enough to insure proper cooling and lubrication?
4. Did you run the engine for more than 5 seconds at full wide open throttle?

If the answers to 1,2 or 3 are no, or the answer to 4 is yes - the problem is user error. Take some time while your engine's on its way back to the factory to learn about these and other things you need to know about nitro engines.

If you performed a proper breakin, it was tuned correctly, and didn't overthrottle the engine, it' DEFINATELY a warranty issue. Should only cost you a few bucks for shipping.
 
By the way, I am new to the Nitro industry! I followed the break-in procedures to the best of my knowledge and ability. I followed line by line. After reading a bit last night on several site's. I came to the determination that it is possible the engine over heated due to lack of circulating air. When the body was on the car, no air seems to flow thru. So last night I decided to cut air holes in the front and rear windshield's. Also thanks for the recommendations, they were more than helpful.
 
Since this was 'day one', were you still on factory needle settings, or had you started to lean it out?
If it was still factory rich, body or no body, it would not have gotten hot enough to cause damage.
If you had leaned it out too much, or too soon, that might have been the problem.
Had you been leaning it yet? If so, how much, and did you have a temp gauge?

If you broke it in under manufacturer's instructions, it should be under warranty for any other "abuse" - i.e., improperly tuned or running at full throttle for extended periods of time. :D Although you **should** have cooling holes (it should have mentioned that in the manual) this shouldn't be sufficient to cause your engine to disintegrate. There's lots of stuff to learn, keep reading and welcome to the hobby!
