They aren't BAD. In fact, they are getting better all the time. Think of them as a beginners RC. PM Amoeba if you need more info on Redcat--he loves 'em!

how does the redcat compare to the new t-maxx 4908?

IMO they are both good 1/10th rigs. Neither is a Savage nor a LST but both are decent rigs (and don't have the high pricetag). If it were me I would go T-Maxx for Traxxas' customer service and ease of getting parts almost anywhere.
