My son wants a nitro RC

Right on. Honestly fuel isn't that expensive, gallon can be had for less than $30 and it will last you quite awhile. Tuned right a tank can last 12-15 min depending on driving style and one gallon will give you about 24 tanks or so. ~5 hours of driving. Take a lot of batteries to get 5 hours of driving plus charging them constantly, main reason I went nitro. That and the wwwwwwWWWWWAAAAAAAAA!

Hey guys, just went through the first tank of gas. I had forgotten how much fun RC's are :). Well, couple issues to sort. It stalls when I brake and it won't go into reverse. The idle is high so that may be why it won't shift, or the FOC mod was done. But with the idle high then what's with the stall when braking? Is it the clutch, the truck doesn't move whie idling which makes me think the clutch is functioning properly. Is there a good source for microfiche so I know where to start digging?

i had the same issue when i was running at the beach. some how my air filter got knocked off and dirt got sucked into the carb, i ended up taking the carb off and cleaning it with Nitro fuel and then i ended up taking the whole engine apart to check the clutch shoes, spring, and piston and sleeve. i cleaned everything and the buggy runs fine again. i'm not sure what the real problem was but i believe it was a dirty carburator since it was running but not responding correctly to the throttle and stalling right out when i braked.

You need to make sure that there is a throttle gap in the carb with brakes on of about 1/2 to 1 mm (about the thickness of a credit card). That should help with the stalling when braking. An easy way to check for the FOC is to look for a servo connected with a linkage to the transmission.

If you're idling and the truck isn't moving then i'd say your clutch is just fine. Since the truck is used you will probably have to re-tune the engine along with re-setting the trim knobs on the controller..I'm betting it's all screwed up. If it's stalling when you break, then the idle gap is too small so the engine dies. Take the air filter off and check the carb gap, it needs to be at 1mm. If the gap is fine then more than likely its the LSN is too lean, causing the engine to idle too high. Once you get the idle under control and its tuned somewhat correct, it'll shift much easier.

I've got it on the bench, looks like the brake/throttle linkage. When I engaged the braked the carb slide shuts. I am following the procedures to adjust this now. Stay tuned for more newb moments. and thanks

I've often wondered if anyone ever figured out how many miles we get to the gallon with these rigs.
There are certainly many SMILES to the gallon.
That would be pretty easy actually. Well, easy enough. Put an odometer on it, full tank, count the miles. I bet you could even come close to actual with something built into the radio system. Hell there may actually already be such a feature on some radios for all I know LOL.

Thanks Rolex, I cleaned the carb and replaced all of the seals, reset the jets to factory positions, and went from there. It's running to a satisfactory level now. This thing doesn't tuned like any engine I've worked on, which is quite a lot. It's tough when you can't straddle it and rip down the road to feel it out.

UPDATE; EXCELLENT CHOICE!
Hello,
my advice would be to go for either a HPI Trophy 3.5 (Excellent build quality, very strong, nice price and phenomenal customer service)
or a Ofna Hyper 7

otherwise these are the brands to stay away from and what to look at:

STAY AWAY FROM:
Red cat, acme, condor, or anything else with little information or blingy looks and a silly price.

HEAD TOWARDS:
Losi
HPI (Favourite)
Traxxas
Kyosho (very expensive)

You can also head towards X-Ray. They're even more expensive than Kyosho, but you get what you pay for in this case.
