Okay, as some of you know I live in an apartment. It's supposed to rain here all weekend. I thought a good way to while away a wet weekend would be to paint my new 5B body, but I have nowhere outside to do so. So here's my idea, I need to know if this will work. And if it's just plain dumb, tell me so. I have a spare bedroom that's basically a storage room. I was planning on picking up a box fan, and taking large pieces of cardboard and duct taping them to said fan on all sides to make a booth, with the fan pulling fumes outward through an open window. The fan will sit on the window sill, and the entire box / booth will be supported by my work table. Would this work in a pinch? I think in principle, it should.

The wind pressure will pull the paint around the body, may cause issues. Just stick the fan in the window pointing out, and set up a spot off to the side to do the painting.

Your standard floor fan isnt' designed to create negative pressure for an enclose area. As Alien said, it may pull your spray making it difficult to get coverage, or it may do nothing at all. I have tinkered with the idea of building a small booth myself, but they can be purchased as well. In order to create a true "draft" booth it takes a bit more than a floor fan and a box I think. Atleast for it to work well.

you dont need to go though all that crap with the cardboard. Just put the fan in the open window, and keep the paint out of the airstream.

I depends alot on the wind outside. You need to have a window partially open in the other side of the apartment too. I would take out the screen if it has one and use the cardboard too. You shouldn't have any issues with the paint being pulled away from your work if you control the air coming from another room. I've sprayed stuff outside on a cold day and stunk up the whole house bringing it in to dry. You will have fumes, there's no way around it.

Yes that does work fine, but in an apartment the fumes may be a concern to the neighbors.

My wife loves to whine about it so I just go out in the yard when it's warm enough.

I throw a towel under the door when i do mine. the door frame does a pretty good job keeping most of the fumes localized to the room i spray in.

I tend to just spray outside my apartment when I rattle can.

The only reason that thee are only 2 female smurfs and no infant smurfs is that they take blue M&Ms for smurf control, that's why my sig is what it is.

Thanks a lot for all the good tips guys. My apartments are unique in that there are only four units per building, and the exhaust window is on the back side, and no one goes out in the back yard, because there isn't one, it backs right up to a bank. So, I should be good to go. Hope to get started on it tomorrow.
