That engine has been discontinued for a long time. I highly doubt you're going to find a new one and even eBay doesn't have any used ones. Just buy a Dynamite or SH .21 unless you just have to have that specific engine.

He likely needs that motor specifically due to it being a smallblock…

Arent most .21s small blocks?
Nosir. The standard for BB is .21 and up.

There are SOME larger motors that retain a small block crankcase platform, but with larger bore and stroke strictly to put some displacement (and just SELL MOTORS 🙄) in a limited platform that only accepts smallblocks.. I.E.-Revo, T-Maxx, etc.. The old Picco .26 “Max” falls into this category, and was one of the first to be available in this arrangement.. A lot of people referred to them as a “mid block” as it kind of split the difference between SB, and BB motors..

I had one in my highly modified Revo over 20yrs ago just prior to dumping it in favor of 1/8 buggies… Then Truggies when they were released soon after.. If memory serves-mine was a Wasp .26, which was the exact same thing, but lots of idiots back then would swear it was a factory modified.. They were incorrect.. Ran great, tuned great, and lasted foreverrrrr… FAR More power than that Revo could ever put down..

Ahhhh, I've only ever owned one .21. That was an OS .21TM which was a SB I believe because it repalced the Losi 3.4 in my Ten-T. So I thought .21s were the upper end of SBs. Learn something new everyday :)

Yessir-you are correct; it’s a smallblock. Would be a very good candidate for the OP as well, if he can afford it, and he’s not specifically hunting the Losi motor for restoration, or parts purposes. 🍻🤘

And then there's the reverse, the Novarossi Mega SX-15, a .15 with a big block footprint.

Yep! That thing was a real weirdo they made for Serpent 1/10 in the early 2000’s I wanna say.. 😅🤘
Did Novarossi go out of business completely? I remember a couple/few years back they supposedly went out of business but I kept seeing Novas for sale. I havent looked at Nitro engines in a few years so I was just curious.

Yessir. They closed the doors. A fair amount of the OG machinists, and assembly personnel bought up the assets, grabbed a building, and started Nova Engines. A LOT of the old Novarossi die hards jumped on the band wagon for the new Nova Engines, but there’s been mixed feedback.. Seems to me that they’re still working out the bugs on the new line, and there have been a fair amount of quality control issues, down to straight up design flaws.. Hell-I am aware of at least one pro driver that jumped ship mid season as he got tired of DNF’s, and consistent issues around the motors.. And the guy is notorious for staying on top of his shiit, and running a super anal race program..

There are still a bunch of “Novarossi” engines coming out of eGay at absolutely RIDICULOUSLY high prices.. I put NR in quotations, as these are 100000% assembled from “new old stock” Novarossi parts by individuals who bought them all up at crazy low prices as they (Novarossi) were closing the doors. Also be careful of the guy slapping Gimar branded heads (halfway reputable engine modifier) on poorly modified (or even STOCK 😳🙄) “piece parted” engines, and ALSO selling at a premium price..

I’m of the opinion that unless you are fairly knowledgeable in NovaRossi stuff, and can spot the difference(s) between pre-closed down Novarossi engines, and straight up counterfeit; find another engine to stick with. Just my .02.

Since I've already highjacked the OPs thread (Sorry OP), What the heck is going on with Picco? Their website only has 4 engines on it and theyre all .21s. The .28 P3 used to be a wonderful sub $200 engine.

Also, what is a good quality budget engine these days .28 - .32?

It’s all good it looks like-he hasn’t been back on it to view our replies so…🤣

Maybe he’ll learn something from our blabbering if he does come back..

Yeah-.28’s have just about phased out for anything but a 1/8 monster truck anymore… The race .21’s make more power than you could ever hope to put down in all honesty.. I mean 1/8 truggy rules used to include up to .28… Not anymore, as they can’t put down more power than the race .21’s offered today, and drink damned near twice the fuel lol..

RC used to be EVERYONE could tune a nitro motor, because EVERYONE had one.. or seven.. Today, if you come into the hobby-99% of people are not gonna even THINK about going internal combustion.. Just how it is. Couple that with the more instant gratification this country is coming to expect, and nitro doesn’t stand a chance.. Hell-if it’s not Arrma, or Traxxas, nobody gives it a second look… Takes a hot minute for the previous “natural progression” of RC’s to come to fruition compared to ten years ago… But the lack of most folks even being AROUND a serious nitro engine, race grade kit, and a capable tuner (used to be EVERY hobbyist), has people thinking that nitro can’t even COMPARE to electric lol.. But if you toss two 1/8 truggies or buggies on the track, with race engines, and race electronics-you’d be surprised how close they are in lap times.. Not always, but not always NOT either.. They excel in different parts of the track, and in different conditions..

I enjoy BOTH, but I can tell you I absolutely prefer my nitro stuff over my “quick, and clean” electric stuff.. It checks all the boxes for me, and many others.

As far as .28 and up goes today? And a cost effective one? That’s actually going to take/hold a tune? I’d have to say a turbo head Alpha .28..

Stay farrrrrrr away from LRP… You’d likely be buying a 21J OS carb that costs what the entire .32 did, just to get it to tune… and the rod doesn’t last long at all slinging that ginormous .32 piston off of that long stroke crankshaft…

That was my “keep my rant in check” reply lol… It’s easy to get me started on the misconceptions, and myths of nitro stuff that is getting more, and more common due to people never even running them because they didn’t HAVE to..🤷🏻‍♂️🤣

Also-I have had SEVERAL highly modified P3 .28’s, and am a HUUUUUGE fan of Picco.. I promise if I had one today, under no circumstance would I choose it over any of my .21’s…😉

I haven't tried the big block Force engines but their small blocks have been great. They have a .28, the KT28 and a .32, both for under $150. Or you could go nuts with a .46, still under $200 (technically)

Good to know. I started out in the hobby doing both electric and nitro and technically still do both, but I gravitate toward electric because I'm an electronics nerd. Well that and because I was never all that great at tuning a nitro, lol. I do love the sound and the smell of nitro though. Electric just can't take the place of that!.

At one point in time, when I'd see someone trying to stuff a big huge engine on a buggy or similar, I'd always tell them to get a high rpm .21 instead of something huge because having a buggy with a .26 in it, I know it's got enough torque to trash the metal drive shafts in it, but It's not really any faster than the Picco .21 that the buggy came with so that makes sense about the .21 engines.

Agree 100% about the displacement, my .12 onroads are faster the the .15 or .18-powered ones. Modern nitro engines aren't "underpowered" by any means if you gear them right, and even a .21 is a lot of power, potentially twice as much as an old .21 with basic porting and a plain bearing could produce.
