This build started with a KISS (keep it simple, stupid) approach. It didn’t take long to go off the rails. I sort of wanted to keep it a budget build, and then just like that… 🙄 Typical.

After a late night drunken shopping spree the stuff started to roll in.

And jeez man, how can I upgrade the suspension without also doing Scorched titanium center shafts and his lovely front Trident? And seriously, there’s no way I’m putting those in anything but a PPS motor mount, right?

I set the ride height by removing the springs from the shocks, installing them on the chassis, and measuring the difference between full extension and the compressed measurement at the desired ride height. That yields the length of the internal limiter for the shock shafts. I feel that his method is a good approach because it takes a crap load of tension off the droop screws, which can then just be used to fine tune the corner balance when you’re done. Many use fuel tubing. I use hard nylon spacers. Those stupidly stiff Redondo Beach springs will add as enough of a buffer.

If you’ve never done it, especially with those super stiff springs, you have no idea how difficult it is to reassemble the shocks with a much shorter travel and springs that stiff. There will be profanity, and a couple of instances of walking away from them and coming back later. Here’s a before/after shock set up for the preferred ride height with stock pistons and 80wt shock oil. It’s worth the effort, and I feel it’s the right way to set up the car.

Got the body fitted, just needs a little trimming up and finishing. I made some (probably too short to do much good) vertical stabilizers from some carbon fibre angle. Why is carbon angle so hard to find, and when you do find it why is it so freaking expensive?
The kitten is Nacho. If I’m at my bench, so is he.

Almost finished masking. The stickers that come from Delta Plastics for this 917 body are…crappy. The decals are from MCI racing in Canada. You can design your own sheets in addition to his already splendid graphics of many different liveries. Don’t swamp this guy with orders, please. I don’t want my stuff to be delayed…😊 https://mciracing.ca/

It’s really disappointing that the Tamiya PS light blue doesn’t match the cap. It’s too blue, and too bright for a proper Gulf livery. Whatever. It’s pretty, it’s just not accurate.

I told you. He’s utterly omnipresent. Indeed a groovy cat, man.

Here it is finished. I loves me some 917’s. Sex on wheels.

And yeah, the Hoons are just for the shell. She’ll have GRP’s to run. Also, I wanted to point out how small the real 917’s actually were, because people seldom get a good perspective. Here’s Derek Bell revisiting one of his test cars. He is not a tall man.

How about 246 mph down the Mulsanne straight at LeMans? In 1971?!?! He is a god to me. Check this out, six minutes of simply wonderful entertainment.
Thanks for looking at my build!
