Well, I caved and ordered the WLtoys 144010. Wanted to support the OG, but the price dif was just too much of a draw. RTR w/3 bats $125 out the door on ali. Thanks for all your info and advice!!

Cancel your order now, the 144001 is a giant turd compared the LC Racing cars and not all of the parts are compatible, just the a arms, front/rear drive shafts, hubs and caster blocks, everything else is completely different. The one I bought everything was made out of cheese, the motor and esc both let out he magic smoke within the first few packs and the stock shock towers folded like an origami napkin.

Oof, that is an expensive WLpaperweight™️

When I think of buying a cheap item like that (like surpass hobby vs hobbywing esc), I compare it to buying the option I should be going for: by asking myself would I buy the better item if it was discounted by the price of the cheaper one? So would I buy the LC racing if it was $125 off? Yes. Of course. WLtoys makes the worsts cars I have personally ever had. Absolute worst was the a959b and the 1/12-1/14 is number 2 worst ever. Slick knows what he’s talking about

Wow! I didn't know WL was so unpopular!!!
I own a cheap r/c but I bought it as such and KNOW what it is and is not.
I didn't recommend it here because I spend a LOT of time customizing and upgrading things to make it better where it was lacking. If I didn't have extra parts kicking around from other cars, this would have cost a fortune to build.
My car is great fun but its still not great! Getting there...
I bought it with full intent to build it this way.
Limitations in my car are showing... I can't buy a good bearing diff for it. They aren't made.
The metal used for the drive shaft and axle shafts is horrible.
Even the upgrades aren't great. Like the aluminum bellcrank doesn't use bearings either.
The company is in China. They have been AWESOME abput helping me find and get parts BUT China shipping takes time and thats how it is. I stocked up on A arms axle shafts, diffs and a few other things so I wouldn't have to wait a month to ship each time I broke a part.
I would imagine you could run the WL this way also.
I think the LC would be my next 1/12 scale off roader still.

Hmmmm, well I guess I'm going to learn the hard way :-( ....Although, it's not a 144001 which does seem like a turd. It's the 144010 which seems to have stepped up a bit based on current reviews and comparisons. Figure I'll just upgrade as things break. And, mebbe be back here issuing the same warning as you ;-)

OK, after your comments and reading most of this...https://www.quadifyrc.com/rccarreviews/upgraded-oem-wl-toys-vs-lc-racing-emb-t-comparison-part-1
I canceled my order. The comparo is based on the 144001, so not sure if the ...010 is vastly improved, but now I'll never know :-(

Don't mind a little tinkering, but had more than enough of trying to get by with junk sooooo...

Thanks, guys!

Great choice to cancel! The 144010 is the same platform. Being brushed/brushless doesn't make a difference because it won't be working 95% of the time, lol! If you really need a budget pick get the SCY 16102 pro platform. Of course it's a step down from LC racing, but it's bulletproof and easy to work on. Many here will probably look down on them but they have never driven them! Like the LC, it's hard to find somebody who had an SCY (suchiyu) pro model and didn't have a good experience.

We run an FB group, SCY/JJRC Rc Cars, check it out if you are interested. Good info and I have a mini website with upgrade info

Thanks for the info, guys. I'll check those cars out. At this point, I'm kind of just keeping an eye on the used market for a sub $200 merv, summit or emb. If I can remember, I'll check on ali periodically for a sale. Derbycity vids are pretty entertaining and I got a pretty favorable impression of the hbx line from him but they don't have something the right size w/o having to mod or upgrade. Will poke around at the scy stuff, too.

I was just looking at an HBX video too.
I guess they do a lot of rebranded stuff so it might be the same as other kits at different pricepoints depending on what model you're looking for.

Do be careful with used cars. Some are fine I'm sure but you may very well spend more to repair/restore a used kit than to have purchased new from the start.
The pricepoint sort of dictates too.
I have seen Deerc 200e "slightly used" for more $ than a new one costs.
I want to hear about what you pick and what your impressions are.
I don't know what my attraction to these "cheap" little buggies is but I absoluteky love them!

Lol! I suppose I'll let it slide thise time..

That site is pretty good! I expected a list of like
shock: xyz.com
bearing: pdq.com
lol!!!
70mm shocks are tough but I'm working on a set from Arrma. 😉
Thank you! No affiliate links here. I don’t make money, just spend it. Technically stock is 65mm but I’m feeling that at least the rears need something about 68mm to have proper stance. It sits very “flat” at full extension with 65mm and has no droop. Does the arrma set have enough travel for chassis slap?

I don't own one of these but i have a DeeRC200e that runs about 75mm shocks. I can't answer for the chasis slap on these.
I got my shocks from Jenny's R/C so yay for saving some cake! $$$

https://jennysrc.com/products/arrma...springs-ara4319v3?_pos=3&_sid=30290880b&_ss=r

I replaced the springs with Traxxas front (55mm ?) Springs. I put in some 400cst and they worked exceptionally well.
When I changed up to 2.2" wheels (from the taller SCT tire/wheel) the car wasn't sitting quite as high as I liked and travel was too short so I bought these.

https://jennysrc.com/products/arrma...felony-ara7615v2?_pos=18&_sid=e15ab545e&_ss=r

I replaced the oil with 400 but am replacing again with 200. I am still messing with springs.
In my case, even the very lightest springs from Arrma will be too much.
I have sort of Frankensteined the new (2nd set) shocks. Springs from the original DeeRC with Arrna shock lower from the 1st set of shocks mounted to the 2nd set of Arrma (red alum)shocks.
They look AWESOME.
I'm still working out functionality. The first tests with the new shocks were promising but after a couple of body-less flips, I ground the tops of my new shocks flat on the asphalt!
I have new shock caps and protectors but haven't done the repair yet.

my vote would be for LC
For this guy I’d probably say so, the SCY is definitely budget oriented. Under $100 this has got to be the best…

Aha! Thanks for the info. I looked into using 1/10 on road shocks but never could determine if it would have enough travel. Jennys says the linked shocks are 70mm? That would be even better. I may go for those vendetta shocks if they are 70mm, if I assume it will chassis slap then there are two other main concerns- would it clear the arms? The lower shock rod end is captured and can’t be stood off. And I would also need a bushing of some sort to make the mounting hole m2.5 instead of m3. Still a good idea to look into!

I am still working through mounting issues. Arrma does offer 6S shock stand off.
https://www.arrma-rc.com/en/product/shock-standoff-4/ARA330703.html
These seem like a pretty good step in the right direction.
The 6s shocks are BIG! Large diameter body and giant springs compared to the "normal" 1/10 scale shock body.
The 1st set is much smaller.
The reason I had to put the 2nd set of shocks together with pieces of 1st set was due to lower A arm clearance and spring compressed was interfering with full compression. I def had to "make" them fit.
There are pretty good measurements availible for the shocks on Jenny's but you can contact them (or me) for specifics. Jenny's has been awesome about answering my questions accurately. Very helpful!
Keep in mind, The clock is ticking at Jenny's. The car is disconn'd so the 1st set I posted at Jenny's disconn'd too!
I bought another set to replace the first ones I took apart. They are in a zip baggie on my table still.
Maybe not the "ultimate" titanium nitride heat hardened... but these shocks are pretty well built. They move smoothly enough for any level of precision I will ever get out of the rest of the suspension. (like from plastic flex)
These shocks are built with bodies and shafts that could be consudered "oversized" for small scale buggies. While they might be heavy, unless you flip your car over and grind them down on the asphalt like I managed to, or HAMMER something directly on the shock itself at full tilt speed, I don't see ever breaking these things, bashing or racing.
In short, for $20.00, I recommend rolling the dice.
70mm is accurate eye to eye btw.
The first set (gray/black/orange) are plastic bodies just so I mention it.
You WILL need to change oil and springs as mentioned also.
Check the fit before you invest in the rest of the fun though! 👍🏻😉
You can ask them but Jenny's would prob let you return the shocks if you don't mess them up!😆
If they fit on your car, you WILL be happy.
Your stocker spring/dampers are just like the DeeR/C units. Very bouncy and not really functional even it you rebuild them.
Arrma are actually shocks! Lol!
