I have the Futaba T2PH and i'm experiencing quite a lack of range. I only get maybe 50 yards at best before i lose control. Is there anything I can do to remedy the problem, or is it just a crappy model? This is with brand new batteries in both the remote and car.

You have a problem other than batteries. I also hope you have a failsafe installed and programmed.
Check your antenna wire for cracks or breaks. Check all the receiver contacts where the battery pack plugs in.
Check ALL the connections from the Batt pack to the Rx.

maybe i'll try what we call "avionics in a can" in my industry, electrical contact cleaner. But I could stand to upgrade anyway. What is a good reliable radio to use? I'd like something a step above what i have now, but nothing super fancy and expensive.

I like the avionics in a can! When you open it up have a good look at where the receiver wire is soldered to the board and where it exits the case these ares are prone to chafe and damage.

As for a good radio check out the JR xs3, fully digital and synthesized so you don't have to worry about crystals and they can be had pretty cheap on the boards or ebay.
