Is it safe to give out VIN #?

I recently put my car for sale on the market and have been flooded with calls asking for the VIN #. I assume it's to run a carfax to check the accident history but can the VIN # be misused for other purposes?

nah you should be allright. A vin number is exposed on every vehicle anyway, so ya should be safe. I listed mine in the auto trade when I sold my old truck. No problems.

But you should be fine. Unless someone has access to DMV records (to get who the car is registered to, address, DL#, stuff like that) then your fine.

This is the first time I've used craiglist to sell anything and have to say the response has been overwhelming. I posted the ad last night at 6:30 PM. By 7:30 I had a couple at my house looking at the car. They are having it inspected by AAA today and are paying for the inspection. I had a family of four stop by at 10:30 PM and took it for a test drive.

Between this morning and last night I have had over 20 emails and just as many calls. If I knew the response was going to be this good I would not have paid the $50 to list it on autotrader.
