Sorry guys but I'm pretty excited about this one and have to tell. Come home from work the other day and look over at the TV and get this really serious WTF look on my face. Wife says, I just turned it on and that's what it was (gotta give her credit she even unplugged it and waited a few then tried it again). Had three images one of each color red blue green with the green being severely bowed at the top and bottom. Well after thinking I'm gonna be shelling out for a new TV (which I wanted but don't need) I decide to do a little searching. Come to find out several different brands of rear projection CRT TV's have an issue with 2 specific semiconductors for the convergence. The green being the issue is shared across both and that's not adjustable in the menu. I read and read and find out these things if taken to a shop are going to run $500+ to fix, or you can get a replacement board with them on there for about $300 if you can find it or order up the chips and do it yourself for under $20. So I consider myself a handy guy, afterall I can make something hurdle across the sky at over 600mph, and decided I've got nothing to lose, find an upgraded set of chips (higher wattage that is direct replacement) for $9.00 each. Get them yesterday and remove the old and solder on the new. Then notice a certain resistor (also on the green channel) looks like it's singed. Give the TV a quick test with the new chips, same problem. Found a place locally today that had the resistor I needed (2 for $1.30) solder it to the board and bam, my TV f***in' works!!! Less than $25 I did it. Sorry for the long read of useless info but I'm one happy camper right now!

I really love that!!!!!!!!! Thanks for the smile. Congrats on fixing the TV. I guess I border on "handy" myself...but most electronics...(unless its a computer issue), electrical, or plumbing scare the **** outta me. Anyway, always nice when that kind of thing works out...great job.

that poop never happens for me....i always end up at the store buy a new one good to hear someones got good luck or is it talent?

It's a JVC. But I read that Panasonic, Toshiba, JVC and I think there was another all use this same semiconductor IC. Part number is STK392-110 but you can use a -150 as an upgrade. I was just so excited cause usually things turn to poop on me and I end up shelling out the dough!

How old is it?

Mines a non-high def Hitachi 60" that is over 7 years old.

I tore it apart about 4 months ago to see if I could clean it to get some of the brightness back... the wife and I smoke. The mirror had a layer of glaze over it as did the 3 light gun lenses and the back of the screen. I cleaned it all off with a watered down solvent (on the screen) and Windex on the mirror/lenses. It's as bright as it was the day we bought it! I had to totally readjust all the settings. I had to drop the brightness down about 35% and drop the color down as well.

I did the same for my parents on a Mitsubishi 54" bigscreen they picked up for $200. It was darker than a shadow at night. After cleaning about an inch of dust off the projectors and cleaning the mirror, it was brighter than the TV it replaced.

So I consider myself a handy guy, !

Well if your wife can't find you handsome, she should at least find you handy! :p: J/K

My wife gets mad because I always fix things instead of just going and getting new one, even worse when I go buy something that's broke just so I can fix it!

Congrats on the fix

That's awesome! My 20" Toshiba has a similiar issue which I may look into now and see if it's not fixable... But I don't know if I want to be without TV for a week while the CRT discharges, lol.

The only thing that is better than fixing something yourself is saving an ass load of money...Good job on doing both!

my mum moans at my dad for that. She just wants the job done but my dad wants to sav money. He always end's up fixing whatever. I would love to know how much we've saved by fixing and not following the so called 'throw away' nation

I grew up in a finacially challenged household, so I don't like throwing things away. Some of the stuff people throw out amazes me. I not only save, I make money by fixing a lot of stuff because I have no use for it after I fix it so I sell it.

Sweet deal Jet! I would have never thought to look to see if I could fix it. I probably would have just gone out and bought a new TV that I wanted, but really didn't need. LOL I would have been like the guy on the Circuit City commercial, when his wife says he can get a bigger TV! LOL Good deal my friend, maybe next time I will do a little research before I go out and shell out a few thousand $$ on a new TV.

Great idea, Jet! If it's something you might have to replace with a completely new unit, why not take the old soldering iron to it. It's great to be able to fix things yourself. I can understand how easy it is to use a soldering iron. I used to build avionics a while back.

Enjoy the TV!
