Hello, first of all I'm new here, hi!!

I'm also new to nitro RC trucks. By new, I mean this is my first truck and I don't really know what I'm doing, but I want to keep at it :)

Would someone be able to identify this truck I bought off my friend for $30?

It came with the remote control, glow plug/charger few other things. If I remember correctly my buddy smashed it into a curb and didn't want to bother fixing it. I started it up shortly after he dropped it off and it ran and idled. HOW DO YOU SHUT IT OFF? :( Neighbors were confused at the noise and I was struggling to figure out how to shut it down lol. Eventually it just idled down enough that it stopped running. :dancin:

Oh yeah, once I know the model of the truck I need to buy a body for it too :P Recommendations? I like older Chevy half-ton style bodies if any exist.

And a more important question, where I can I buy replacement parts that will ship to canada?

Below I took some pictues and I have questions about a few of them.

Is there supposed to be a cover for the gears here?

These 'fins' are bent, will this affect performance?

The screw on the right appears to have been micky moused in and I fear the threads may be stripped.

Screws have fallen out and plate is bent, can be straightened but I need the proper screws and what not.

It looks like I'm missing an entire drive shaft for the front end :( (I need one, where can I get one?)

Front bumper is pretty much totalled. I need one of these too.

This blue thing attaches to what appears to be some sort of grab handle in the center of the truck but it's broken off.

:trashed:

How's that for a first post?

SCORE!!!30bucks YEAH!!!

Its a Monster GT by Team Associated or for our UK members a Thunder Tiger MTA4.

Get a screw kit from Team Fasteddy and if he can get the Team associated replacement parts too. If not then I would look to RushRC. Ask for Jessie...anything after that.... ebay.

Its the Team Associated Monster GT. Take it to you local hobby store (LHS) and get the parts there. I would also suggest reading lots about nitro engines as far as how to tune and whatnot. And take apart the truck and clean everything and check for other things. There should be a manual also, the admin here has a site called www.rcdocuments.com where there should be a manual.

as far as the fins, it shouldnt.
No, there isnt supposed to be a gear cover.
That blue thing attatches to that cheap rollbar made of thin metal.

And for $30, wow. What a great deal. The rims/tires alone are close to that.

I don't have a local shop that deals with nitro cars/trucks so I have to buy online :(

I'll do as you suggested and read up about the engines for sure, I'm gonna start tearing it apart right now.

I just placed an order for drive cvd's, going to go for a screw kit next.

Man, talk about a score! You could not have gotten a better truck to start out with. Especially for the price paid! It's still a present-day model, so you can get parts very easily for it.

Welcome to the site. You'll find the people here are among the most knowledgable and friendly there are.

While you have it apart, you may want to go over it and clean it off; the stuff that you'll use is just simple dish soap and water, except on the engine; a toothbrush will work just fine there. Just be careful not to get dirt or water in it.

When reassembling, remember any metal-to-metal screws get locktighted with the blue stuff.

Outside of that, if you got the controller with it, you got a really great deal.

Yup, got the controller with it, and a glow plug with charger :)

I need some allan wrenches which I don't have at home. I'll get some from work tomorrow along with some thread lock :D

Edit: Here's the only other things I found that were damaged.

Some tire damage

I believe this is a turnbuckle? It's bent pretty good, will see what I can do about this at work.

Great score bud! That theres the best way to enter the hobby.

Does your friend have any other good broken stuff?

You may find replacing that turnbuckle would be the wisest route. You can get a new one for around $10 or so. Simply bending it back into shape may give you a usable rod, but, it may end up bending, due to fatigue.

Now, as for allen wrenches, common sizes on the AE models... here's the sizes that are most common, and cover 99% of the screws;

SAE: .05", 1/16", 5/64", 3/32"
Metric:1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0 MM

Don't go the cheap route here; if you comprimise with the cheap little L wrenches, you'll strip screws and never get the engine apart/back together satisfactorily. A good set of hex drivers are what ya want.

Glowplug is 8mm. Bit of caution here; no monkey force. Just snug it.

A couple phillips screw drivers (AE recommends a #3, but a size up and size down are good ideas), a decent flathead with a handle on it that's about the size of a finger around (for carb tuning.. makes it very easy to fine tune), and a couple different types of pliers (needle nose, channel locks, etc). Also, some nut drivers are a good idea.

Those are the key tools you'll want in your toolbox, and will make any repair a cinch.

Now, the question here is, did he give you any fuel? How about a squirt bottle for fueling up?

Oh, I forgot to add; there are a few different ways to kill the engine off...

One way is to pinch the fuel inlet line as close to the carb as you can get.

Another is to put a finger (with a rag over it!) over the exhaust.

Another is to let the tank run out.

My preferred method is just a thumb-jab to the flywheel. If you do it quickly, you won't feel it. The engine has to be at idle for this, tho.

Good information, I'm going shopping! :D

No squirt bottle. Or fuel, just whatever is in the tank, about enough to start it a few times. Will get one.

get rid of the fuel that is in the tank ASAP and clean the fuel lines out as well and at least be sure all the fuel is out of the engine by turning it over a few times with the glow plug ignitor on it. if you can get some, use after run oil through the glow plug hole in the top of the engine. the nitromethane fuel that these cars run on LOVES water and will attract the humidity out of the air then you will have crappy fuel that will just mess up your engine

Greenwing brings up a great point. Add some good quality afterrun oil to the list; if you're in a pinch, Marvel Mystery Oil works great. Just a few drops down the glow plug hole, then cycle over the engine, put the plug back in, and you're done.

Clear out the engine first. This is done by running the tank dry, then trying to start the engine until it won't start anymore. Roughly 2-3 times is about the average. Then oil it and store.

You only need to do this after a days' running, not each tank.

The fuel type you're going to want is probably 20% nitro (that's the average). You may want to ask your friend what he ran in it. You can change brands, but as a rule of thumb, you'll want to stick with the percentage, and make sure it's CAR fuel, and not AIRCRAFT fuel; totally different oil ratios.

Also, RushRC is a great person to deal with. He can get you awesome prices on anything.

I read a thread on here yesterday about after run oil, gonna get me some soon.

How well do these trucks run in winter weather or below zero temperatures.
Will moisture from melting slow harm anything on the truck?
Obviously it'd need to be tuned to run in the cold.

Well, you can always water proof your servo boxes, I heard o the method of "fuzzying" felt and then sticking it in holes where the linkage goes into the reciever box.

Anyway, I want to see a pic after you cleaned this thing up, looks pretty bad right now =-o

If i'm not mistaken that car is worth 500$ new?

First thing I would do is go to RCDOCUMENTS.com and get a manual for this rig. Read it and find out parts you need and get a list going. Next go to Home Depot and get a few gallons of Denatured alcohol, a tall spray bottle, an air compressor or compressed air and CLEAN THAT RIG UP!!!IT does n't look too rough. Do you know the condition of the tranny other than the missing drive shaft? Is there any history to this truck yo know of? Iactually may have some spares to help you out.. Not much but it may help you.
