So my first dip in the electric r/c pool is going to be with a Slash. It's cheap and when I get tired of it, I'll give it to my son (who's barely two now, but it's part of the reasoning I convinced my wife with). So now that's settled, What else should I have for it? Can you guys recommend good battery/charger options?

I probably shouldn't start with LiPo, unless someone convinces me otherwise. I trust this place so let's hear it!

Thanks!

I went the semi-cheap route with a Dynamite Prophet Sport AC/DC Peak charger and two Venom 7.2 volt 6 cell 3600 mAh batteries with the Traxxas connectors. $29.95 for the charger and $36.99 each for the batteries. I get decent run times of around 20-25 minutes per battery and about 30 minutes to charge a battery with D/C at 4 amps. If you use the charger on A/C it will only charge at 2 amps so it will take twice as long to charge...

I first ran mine with the venom 4200mah nimh 7cell hump packs, and the prophet plus charger. The charger sat right at $65, and the batteries at $50 a piece, but you get longer runtimes, and greater speed with the 7cell vs the 6cell. I no run the Castle Creations Mamba Maxx 5700kv brushless, with a 18tooth pinion and am getting 60mph with 30min+ runtimes on a 3s lipo at 5400mah.

Thanks, cody and alpine, I'll look into those pronto.

If you get batteries with Traxxas connectors then you will have to get an adapter for the charger or convert it to Traxxas as well. I just use the adapter so I can still use my receiver adapter as well.

Adapter: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXSDC1&P=8

You can also get the male Traxxas to Molex adapter to run regular batteries or buy a bunch of male Traxxas adapters and re-wire 'em.

Too many options I know, but its something you need to decide on before you buy.

careful, i have melted a few of the tamaya connectors on my slash before i went all deans.

I was thinking I would wire everything up with Traxxas connectors and use the banana to Traxxas charger lead to charge the batteries. Lot of guys like the Duratrax ICE charger, so I think I'll invest in that so when I do go lipo I won't need another charger.

The Traxxas connectors are pretty decent, right?

They are ok. I prefer the deans though, because they are just more solid to me. I also use the duratrax ice charger for all of my batteries. i have 2s, 3s, nimh, nicd, all different sizes, and all using deans plugs and the ice.

Do your batteries come supplied with the deans or do you solder them yourself?

Traxxas or Deans--either way the idea is to use high-current connections to keep up with the high capacity batteries you are using and the draw they are under. Molex can't keep up. The Molex to Traxxas adapters are okay for charging so you don't need to replace the charger plug unless you want to. Good luck!

I've decided to get the Duratrax ICE and a few (always keep an extra one charged right?) 7.2v 4200 mah Venom packs. That ought to move a stock Slash around the yard a bit.

Thanks for all your help fellas.
