Very strange Hobby Plus Terranaut 8x8 incident yesterday... I was running my unmodified Terranaut in the living room when something caught my eye: thin wisps of white smoke coming out from under the truck in the motor area and getting thicker! I ran across the room and grabbed it, worried about a fire. By then it had stopped smoking.

Everything was still functioning and nothing felt hot. The motor was cool. I looked it over very carefully and found no melted wires, no evidence of scorching, heat discoloration of any parts or wires, etc. Nothing even smelled burnt. It seemed totally fine. I put it back down and continued to run the rest of the battery with no issues and everything working properly.

What the... ?

Had it happen a few times. On my axial it did it when the motor was dirty. It even stopped working. Turn the wheels when jrtting water into it fixed it up. On my stampede I had a metal hook hit the wires just right on the gold plated plug.

Maybe I just need to vacuum the living room more often... 😄

The lacquer on a winding can smoke before it fails if its right on the limit. Smells gross. Noticeably gross.

This.
They can do this until that lacquer is burnt through. Then the windings will short and really put on a smoke show for ya. Then no go no mo.

My incident had no odors involved, thank goodness. I did sniff the motor and the receiver/ESC. Fresh as daisies. :thumbs-up:
