Gateway 2000 Solo, running Windows 95. Does anyone know how I can bypass the password to upgrade the OS?
How do I brighten the screen?

First to brighten the screen: It should be a function key. On my laptop it is a combination of the function key (to the left of the space bar sometimes labeled fn) and the f8 key (there should be a symbol that looks like a light with an arrow up).

As for the password: Most often Windows uses an administration password. That would be the password of the owner and/or primary user of the computer. If you haven't already tried it you can fire the computer up, put the OS disk in the CD drive, and reboot into safe mode. That should let you go ahead and install the new OS. That is how I got around things when installing XP from my old laptop onto my mom's desktop running 95.

Good luck.

I got in. I also found the brightness. (Fn key + arrow up or down)
I'll be putting XP Pro in it.

I'm probably a little late, but you shouldnt need the password to reload the OS. unless its a hardware password. most of the older windows, (95, 98, me) when it asks just hit cancel and it will go ahead and boot up.
