AAARGH My second pull start broke on my Kyosho 4WD GS11 engine... I BLOODY HATE PULL STARTS!
Crap! CRAP!

Is there ANYTHING on this planet that doesn't break?

HELP
I'm about to buy a new Nitro MT2 .18 SS but if it has a f00kin pull start I think I'll have the same crap all over again, is there a solution for this prob???

Thankz,

Q

take the pullstart off any try to determine the problem. I've been through a couple lately myself. mostly cuz of human error :D Sometimes they just go though... the coil gets weak or the string frays or whatever. Before you go buy another see if there is anything you can do to fix it. Pullstarts are pretty handy IMO but sometimes they are a pain. Let us know. :)

Like everything else in this world that's mechanical, it needs proper care and maintenance. The pull starters cord get's frayed when used, the coil gets weak over time, the bearing and assembly gets caked with oil over time... these things need care to keep the annoyances down.

Out of 10 engines, I've had 2 pullstarts break that I thought was premature. Both were the spring. Both happened during breakin. In both cases, it was repairable without any extra parts, but that doesn't make it much less annoying.

Ok found the problem, and it's not repairable :(
The spring broke... Due to age I guess since the pull start was about 8 years old and today was the first time it was being used ever since...

Anyway sure it's mechanical but they still are ....... argh :D

I would just get a starter box. It should work on your 18ss and s ton of other cars... buggies, st's, cars, some mt's, etc.... it is great cuz u dont have to pull anything and you don't have to worry about anything breaking

that sucks man. broken PS's are a pain in the ass cuz unless you can rig something you're pretty much done until you either get a new one or some other way to turn it over. I feel for ya man, it sucks I know.

Yes MT2 18SS is pull start but i beleive HPI makes a rotostart back plate for it.

Thank goodness for starter boxes! I never looked back once I started using one.

you can get a "Tiger Drive" system that replaces your pull start recoil mech. and use your cordless drill. they cost about $25 I think. Or you can get a universal Starter Box and replace the pull start cover plate with one that will actually seal up your engine and get better proformance out of it. :hammer:

I had a pull start slip due to fuel leaking into the one way bering from where the shaft goes through the backplate (on an O.S. engine). What a pain!

I was a big pull start fan until I tried a starter box. The starter box cranked over a flooded (not hydro locked) engine and had it going in less than half a minute.

If it weren't for the fact that I had to carry all my stuff in a gym bag to where I race/bash I would get a starter box.

dude do like i done you can go to your local lowes or homedepot and pick a good size box with wheels and a handle that will fit in the trunk of your compact car i have a ford focus so i know about limited space i carry my starter box my battery which is a small marine battery because it last longer than the gel cell batts and all my tools 2 gallons of nitro fuel and i carry it all in this box and it fits in the trunk of my focus so you could have your starter box and the mobility.......lol.....

roto starts are junk dont waset your money on one if you want to replace one way bearings every time you run then buy a rotostart i have a picco 26 i used a rotostart on i put 7 yes 7 one way bearings in it in les than a week from using a roto start i put my pull start back on i have had no problems starts first or second pull every time even cold

Holy crap. That was one sentance...... :cross:

Seems like I am doomed with my junk no matter what I have. I've broken 3 strings so far, 2 on my MGT(one was there long enough to be used 3 times) and one on my GS15R. My 2.5R's I've had, I think I maybe broke a string once, in about 8 gallons. My starter box doesn't seem to have the torque to start my RB S7. It takes about 5-10 minutes of bumping it over to generate enough heat to get things to expand enough to allow it to turn over. I like torturing myself, so thats why I havent bought a new box yet. (I'm using mycar battery to power it, so batteries aren't the issue) Of course, if I had a better understaning on how to tweek the carb for easier starts, id be in luck, but why mess with it when it runs great once warmed up?

My biggest problem was with water, and runaways. My rigs now all have failsafes, but before I had fun with 8 hour teardown and repair sessions :P

the water what i do is put balloons on every thing servos radio gear all of it . it works real good for me my mgt and my lx comp both have been completly under water asnd both have drove away from it ........

I have pull starts on all of my Nitro Motors. This includes a Picco .26, an HPI S-25, and an HPI 18ss. I have no problems with the pull start. If the motor is tuned and primed properly it should start quickly. I do agree that a starter box is pretty cool and I may end up getting one for my 18ss when I race the car (just so I can start without pulling the body). I will continue to use a pull with my big blocks. I like the way they let you feel the motor's compression and rotation. It is easy to set the motor to BDC with a pull.

Can you use a starter box and still have the Pullstart on the engine? Or do you have to take the pull start off?

jcchase

No idea I'd like to know that too :)
Anyone? Do you need another backplate or can you use both?

You can put a pull start motor on a starter box as long as your flywheel extends out far enough. I have done it.

Usually the pullstart engines have a slightly thicker engine mount to make room for the P.S., but also have a flywheel that is thinner but bigger in diameter to still reach the flywheel hole. So you sould be able to just drop it on a starter box and bump it and it should work.
