I don't know if it's my area or what, but I have yet to have a transmitter than will work more than 250 yards or so. Then they start to glitch really bad. I haven't tried any higher end radios, just a few RTR's and the MX3.
It may be due to the fact that I run NiMH cells in my transmitter which only charge up to about 11V safely. I've always run NiMH's.
I've used 2 JR XR2's, 2 Traxxas TQ3's and an Airtronics MX3 with the airtronics receiver and a novak XXtra receiver. I get the best distance and least glitching with the MX3/Novak combo.
