Just bought a new PC and has a DVD-R with windows XP. How can I record a movie DVD if I don't have another DVD player in my tower? Can I copy the movie to the Hard drive & then copy it from the HD?

There are some pretty nice articles over at Digital-Digest on how to backup and copy DVD's.

I however use two peices of software which I've NEVER found a DVD I couldn't copy. They are extremely easy to use, and pretty fast as well - pretty much click and done. The first product I use is AnyDVD which allows me to play any DVD from any region on my DVD player as well as unprotectes the DVD so it can be copied. AnyDVD runs in the background all the time as a driver and everything on that end is done on the fly for you. The second program which actually does the copying and burning is CloneDVD, like I said, click and done - it's so easy! You can purchase both products for $60.00 [ SlySoft Inc. ]

Great info here.

I like DVD Shrink
After trying several free programs this one seems to work the best for me.
You will find a link on the site above as well as a step by step tutorial.

Remember this site doesn't condone the pirating of software or any other illegal activities

I agree... it is just for backup purposes.....

I'll tell you the best use I've found for them is when you travel. If you've got a laptop, portable DVD player, or car with a TV/DVD player copies are perfect for these. Don't have to worry about the dvd getting messed or broken, because if you do then when you get home you can make another copy. The original never gets damaged.

Do the backups you make include the extras? Or is it just the movie? I was told if you wanted to make a true backup you would need a DL disc to copy everything. Of course I wouldn't really care for the extras when I'm on the road.

What is a DL disc?

In regards to your question, most of my backup's have the menu and extras ripped from them so when I put them in to play they go directly to the movie. No previews, extras or anything like that. However I do have some where I've done the entire DVD extras and all. It really all depends on the movie as some movies are DVD-6 which will fit on a regualr DVD-R 4GB disc, though I have ran into some movies that are what they call DVD-9 which will not fit on a regular disc w/o either compressioning the movie (which CloneDVD will do), removing the extras, or both. Even the movies I've had to compress turns out better then VHS, in fact you'd be hard press to tell me which was which if I played both a compressed and non-compressed version for you.

Aww that's right, wasn't even thinking about double layer. Double layer is what you'd use for DVD-9 movies. Again as stated above there are ways to get a double layer movie on a regular dvd.

Thanx for your help guys. I'll check out those links. I

I use DVD X Copy Xpress its simple all you do is press one button "start" or you have to click two buttons if you want the entire disc.

DVD XCopy is one of the best programs available. The Platinum edition will allow a full backup using 2 disks or in express mode, will compress it to one. 123 studios was ban from producing and selling their backup products in the US and have shut their doors. Be aware that if you purchase a copy here in the US the chances of being able to activate it are slim to none. I'm sitting on 30 pre-ban retail packages that can't be activated. (The joys of being a software distributor. 30 units at 78.00 my cost.)

You can purchase a downloadable copy from their European company. Its not meant for sale in the US or anywhere else that it has been found to be illegal.

Well it looks like I lost my copy of dvd x copy with I switched computers can anyone point me to a program that will compress, decode and burn. Hopfully I can still get dvd x copy back.

I'm using DVD shrink 3.2 and the DVD encrypter. Thanx for the info guys.
