I get home today, and my laptop is trashed! I got everything from spyware to virus warnings popping up all over the place.

Ok, all said and done, it wasn't as bad as I thought, I cleaned the single virus I had and dumped the adware. That was the LAST time my wife let HER FRIEND use my laptop for ANY reason. Its also the last time my wife will see it.

ANYHOW, something REALLY WEIRD happened and I can't find the samn things.. In Outlook Express, I had setup 4 sub folders within the 'Local Folders' area. 1 for each SMTP Mail account that I have configured on this box. Well, all 4 of the sub folders and their contents are GONE! can't find the damn things anywhere. They arent in the Deleted within email or the O.S. and in fact, my deleted items still have everything in them!!!!

Anyone every have this happen and actually find them?

Yes I checked all the other sub-folders to make certain that they didnt accidentally get moved.

Christian, I feel for ya. I too have been in that same situation ... well, similar. My wife and I shared the same desk top for the better part of 2 years. I had to deal with missing/misplaced files; unnecessary "add-ons" that she thought were cute; spyware from sites she visited: and she infected me with a virus on more than one occasion! If I were you, just cut the loss. Format it and rebuild. As for the "friend" that did it ... I'd fix that with a lock & key as well as a stern threat to stay away from the computer.

I don't know what OS you're using but I just realized how useful the Administrator function on Windows 2000 & XP are on my 2 laptops. She tried to access them both when I was out. Of course it pissed me off because she has her own laptop now (a used sony vaio PIII 600). Needless to say, the desktop we once shared is off limits to her as well as my laptop.

Now she can load all the crap she finds "cute" and "new" on her own laptop without messing up mine.

I used Outlook Express a lo-o-ong time ago. It seems to me that profiles and mail were stored in *.idx extensions. (I think...) You might search for those and see if you can point OE at that directory if they're there.

Diver's idea is the best for 2k or XP. Deny her admin rights to the local machine. Or better still: Don't even create her a user account.

I'm a bastard that way.

LMAO,
I sent my wifes computer in for repair last week. Sometime in the last day or so, she used my computer and installed the Chinese language pack. HOLLY poop. Anything that doesn't use the standard US character set is in Chinese.

GUESS WHAT Çh®i§tiªñ LMAO
Your name now shows up as a Chinese word. I have yet to ask her the translation. I will post a screen shot later and see if I can get it translated.

Your not the only one with computer / wife issues my friend.

-Ed

Update
The character set that makes up your name uses 3 words.
The closest translations are Develop, Involve, and Close.
This isn't what your name means, just the character set that the Chinese language pac translates.

Yeah, I'm running 2k Pro on this laptop. I'm just going to take it back to work today. I managed to clean all virus and spyware instances without fail. The nice part was I caught it all in the same day it went down so I found all the sites, scripts and STUPID THINGS her and her cousin did while they were on it and was able to rid it rather easily.

WDavidHicks - I'm going to look through the Index files as you suggested. When you say OE, are you just referring to Outlook Express? If so, I still have all my deleted, sent, inbox, and drafts folders. So it has the right .pst configured. Its just the 4 subfolders (which happened to contain all of our inbound mail for months that we choose to keep) are gone.

But Ill go hacking away and see what I find in the idx.

Thank you!

Hey Eddy - The Translation sounds like real life!!! Develop the plan, Involve myself in acting on the plan and the WHAM! Close the deal.

Its almost tear jerking me!

Tell her I love Her! And I miss her wonderful smile and....

Yeah, I just meant Outlook Express.

I don't remember Outlook Express using *.pst files, though.

Chris,

Is it possible your user profile was lost? Or maybe a new one was started somehow, and your old one is still there. Go to documents and settings on C, and see what different users are listed.

Çh®i§tiªñ....still having trouble? If so maybe i can help ya...i married a software engineer:smart:

Nope = still have not been able to find those emails or folders.

I checked the mailbox files themself, the profiles, security settings, all of the OE settings and nothing.

I'm pretty determined that a virus wiped them. But I just can't figure out why it wouldnt have dumped the inbox and other regular folders. It only dumped my custom folders.

Çh®i§tiªñ, you probably thought about this already, but she asked if you archived your emails you should be able to import the .pst file into Outlook.

doesn't exist either.

I'm just going to chalk it up to 'I got hit good this time!'

and only let my pet Chinchilla use the computer!!!

Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

Hey christian have you gone to Microsoft for any updates? I do that periodically. I got the Blasterworm but Norton quarantined it. Check it out!!
