Holes in tyres?

Hi - I'm reallt new to 1/8 scale buggies (though i did own a Mardave Marauder back in the day...) - Was just about to glue my tyres pro-line knuckles 2 - when i read the instruction card than comes with them - it mentions punching 2 holes - one each end of the tyre - presumably this is to let water/dampness out? - Should i bother or not??

Drilling holes will help with the dampening of the tires. If you have a sealed rim that doesn't let them breathe, on a hard landing you could bounce. Think of it like how a balloon tire would work on a 4 wheeler. In the end, it's driver preference though. Some guys do it, others don't. Hope this helped

Cheers man - As my rims don't come with holes out of the box I'm gonna go with puching holes in the treads.

Centrifugal force should then assit dirt and water getting out rather than it getting in - I know just how hard it is to stop water getting into places you don't want it...

Not sure I would put the holes in the tires themselves, that could cause them to fail and fall apart. 2 simple holes in the rims works well. They dont have to be very big in order to do the job.

i have had holes in the tread of my mt tires on many of my previous rigs. i put 4 small holes at equal spaces around the tire, center of the tread. you are right, when you get whater in the wheels it will come out of those holes. it is a pain in the butt to get water out any other way!

I drill holes in the rims. As far as I'm concerned drilling holes in tyres is just inviting a place for a tear to start.
Lets face it I tear them up fast enough as it is....

i usually put holes in wheels, i havent put holes in tires yet, its more of a preference thing, some do, some dont

holes in the wheels are good, they let air in and out when the tires compress. but they wont let water out if you hit a big puddle or something. my old savage almost ripped itself apart on a high speed run with water in the tires. I've never seen a rig shake and jump around like that. i tried squeezing the water out over and over, i fought with it for hours but couldnt get it all. so i broke down and put the 4 holes in the tires. 2 passes down the street and no more water!

Putting holes in the rims allows for dirt/water/mud to get inside the tire and stay there. Then your wheel gets all out of balance.

I've been putting at least two holes in all my tires for years. I've never had one tear due to the holes. Caught a savage tire on a railroad spike once... it tore then.

I put two holes on my 1/8 buggy tires and 1/10 sized 2.2 tires. I put 4 holes in my MT tires. After running a bit in the winter and in mud/water, you can see the spray of water come flying out of the holes when you gun it on the pavement.

Ok they. Lets say I'll try tyres rather than rims. How small should the holes be abouts.
1mm 2mm etc

I read somewhere about 1/8 inch but that seems large (3mm) I'm putting 2mm holes in mine - if they don't appear to drain - I'll up the size.

I use a 3/32" drill bit in my dremel. Light pressure, high speed. Let the drill bit chew a clean hole to avoid jagged edges.
