Just bought a brand new savage x 4.6 bug bock and I finally got it tuned to perfection and ran it 20 minute and now only the front tires drive. The back just freely spin ??? What happened how do I fix it and how easy is it??? Please help me I'm new tothis :)

First place to look would be the grub screws in the drive cups from trans to the diff. They are notorious for falling out on the Savage. When replacing them,be sure to use blue removable thread locker on them.

X2 what Racer said...

But if you're REALLY new and have no idea what a grub screw is (no offense), look at the rear driveshaft and you'll see a drive cup at the trans and at the rear axle the shaft rides in/is keyed to. There's a small grub screw (also called a set screw by some) that locks the drive cup to the trans output shaft and the axle's pinion gear. If the grub screws back off or fall out the shaft on the trans will spin but not transmit power to the drive shaft and thus the rear axle...

Check that first then report back...

Alright I checked the grub screws and that's not it. What else could it be???

Next thing to check is the rear diff. Follow the exploded view diagram in your manual to remove it from the truck. It's a lot easier on the X, only four or six screws IIRC...

Then open the diff and check the ring and pinion gear as well as the internal spider gears. My bet is you'll find chewed up teeth in there.

You can get the diff parts pretty cheap, then get yourself some Ofna diff shims and shim the ring and pinion for the best mesh, just like a spur gear, not too tight to burn up and not too loose to strip.

I think he's referring to once the OP fixes the broken diff (suspected) to THEN back the slipper off a bit (half turn?) to lessen the shock load to the driveline...

Make sure you check the other grub screws too, you know, at the front end of the rear shaft and both shafts going to the wheels. +1 on the slipper, I had mine just a hair too tight on the xxl and broke a drive cup.

Okay I'll try that. But how do I go about taking this apart? I don't want to take off too much or what I don't need to ?

Everything is okay in the rear diff. What next???

What could go wrong in the gear box. It's got to be in there everything else is good

if theres drive to front then theres drive to back to my knowledge theres nothing in the box that would affect the rear and not the front. its got to be grub screws/hex or dogbone problem. is the hex in the wheels in a good shape?

Follow the driveline until you find the part that isn't moving. Spin the spur, see if the rear center shaft moves. If the center shaft moves, it has to be the diff or the grub screws out back.
