Help or Suggestions?

Hi There,

I have the HPI Nitro RS4 3 Evo and I notice that when I run in a parking lot you can't help but pick up stones in the chasis that can get into you gearing and sieze your clutch. I don't know why these things were designed with such a large opening on the underside of the car but it's there. Has anybody found a way to use a screen or something else to stop this from happening?

i had the same problem with a cen ct4-r. it kept striping my pulleys and riping my belts. i ended up selling it. but you can probly duckt tape it. or run it in a clean parking lot or track. i used to run mynes in the street or at parks. now i run anywhere. exept aver alot of water lol.

Duct Tape, cool I will give that a try. It never even crossed my mind.

you could try those sheets in the self laminating kits. put a few on there and it will stop the junk as well as save a few scratches

The RS4 EVO is a shaft driven type ride. Granted the clutchbell and spur can still get dinged but its more durable.

I suggest using a piece of lexan and giving it a guard underneath and/or bring a broom to clear up the debris in the area you intend to drive on.

I used to bring a blower but it was too bulky and the businesses thought I was the gardner and complained.

Regardless, running on any surface not intended for these touring cars can incur damage to your ride.

All this being said, has anybody made any attempt to bring this up with the manufacturers?
(Oh wait, it is there way of keeping themsleves in the replacement parts business!)

I just used some good old chicken wire to cover the opening on my TS4N......

These were intended to be for competitive conditions on a sanctioned track. Street racing allows all the elements to interfere. The manufacturers would not have set out to make it more durable for consumers like us.

It would be worse if the car was belt driven.

If manufacturers made their cars perfect, it would be high priced.

I've got an rs4-2 and things getting into the gearing and under belts is always a problem when in the road but one thing that worked for me was just some electrical tape to block the openings allowing crap to fly in.

It helped but by no means did it fix the problem.

Thanks for all of the suggestions. But you guys are right, if I am operating in a clean area, I would not have the problem. I tried the duct tape, but it was shredded after only a few runs. I will need to look into placing some mesh or screen to block the stones and such. I have since found some pretty sweet lots that are kept very clean, so that is where I will run for now. Until I can buy something a little higher off the ground. Oh know, it's starting again....must control budget.

can you put the tape on the top side of the chassis? it may last longer that way

I think it was Lessen that used skateboard grip tape underneath the chassis to help protect it from scratches. If you are shredding duct tape I have to wonder if your ride height is too low.

Another option is to go with one of the buggy based rally cars like the Kyosho Inferno GT. These cars have a flat bottom with only an opening for the flywheel. You are trying to run in conditions that were not meant for an on road racer.

You are correct, But I don't know if there will be enough clearance for the gears and clutch. Might be worth a try though I will see how it turns out. Thanks for the tip.
