Help me decide: P5 or WS7II

Man, I knew it! I go to order a P5, tell the store owner "now that motor has better low to mid power than the WS7II right?" He says no the WS7 has better lowend, and the P5 has more topend. Also tells me the WS7II has better fuel economy. Completely opposite of what I have "learned" on the net. What the ?!?!?

well if you lhs owner is like my lhs owner I wouldnt believe a word he said. But I think my lhs is not the norm he is the exception.

This guy is from Kansas and deals only w/engines and pipes. I would hope he knows whats up. Just backwards from everything I've heard.

well I never used those engines so I cannot comment. I would think Flyin Razorback to know his stuff but the rest of us were just speculating on those engines.

Ok, FlyingRazorback, I can get the P5 for $289, the WS7 II for $299. If it makes any difference I have a 63 one piece, don't really want to spend $100 for another pipe. I'm to the point where I'm just going to flip a coin to decide.:dumb:

Like I said, I have ran the P5 and I know it has alot of bottom and the top end came alive around the 1 1/2 gallon mark. My brother had the WS7 and he is running a S7 now. It is not stronger on the bottom than the P5. Probably about equal on the top.
I have not ran the WS7II. I have seen it run and it looks very strong everywhere. I don't know anything other than that. Personally , I think it's like comparing apples and oranges and I don't think you would be disappointed with either the P5 or the WS7II. The 063 pipe should work well on either one.

Thanks for your help FRB. From what the guy w/the motors told me the parts for the Rex are alittle cheaper, so I'll probably go w/the P5. Thanks again.

I think the confusion is the WS7 and the WS7 II. They are different engines. I read someplace that the WS7 II has a better power band and more bottom end that the WS7. I wouldn't bet the farm on that advice, but maybe that's why the LHS guy is saying the WS7II is better. I don't know of anyone at our track that runs one yet either. It's like the new guy on the block no one knows the real deal. Anway, both P5 and the WS7 engines are good. Good Luck.

Isn't it fun when people give you an opinion on an engine when they have never run it themselves?

Bit late, but owning both a C5C and a V01B, I can say that everything FRB has said about the V01B is quite true - i'm yet to see another engine that matches the smooth powerband that it has to offer.

RobH - I can't honestly say there is a glaringly obvious difference in wear time between the RB and OS motors, it's just that the OS likes to be kept rich, and not overheated. If they are both run above what they should be run at, the RB will hold up better. But as long as the OS isn't leaned out more than it should be, it can last just as long. Don't know what it's like over there, but OS replacement parts here are 1/4-1/3 the RB prices, so it's cheaper in the long run to OS it anyway. If they didn't have that advantage though, i'd probably stick to nova/rb.

Sadly, OS has decided to make the replacement pistons for the V01 the same billet/machined ones as the VZB, instead of the original cast ones they came with - and the machined piston is the reason why VZB owners are putting out comments about short lifespans. Some will still stick with OS through this, others will drop out.

Any V01B going on ebay etc will have the cast piston, and you can get many squeezes out of those (osrocket) before you need to worry about getting a new one, so if it was me, i'd still go for it. IMHO, for a smooth racemotor, nothing matches the OS.

The C5 is a rocket, but the powerband is quite on off, would give it a go on the track for fun, but wouldn't be planning on churning hot laptimes with it, at least not on any regular sized track.

And the WS72, well that will fit somewhere in between.

Hey coloradoNitro if you still come on we do have 1/8 racing! In Denver check it out www.ratraceway.com I have the P5 and for the track in Denver it is just right! It's a tight track and the P5 with a 063 has great bottom end.

If you haven't tried already, put a OS 2050 or RB 86 pipe on the P5, the 63 seems to make it run sluggish overall.

the big question i have is .... hows the tuning ability, I'm not a pro and dont know how to tune that well, but i really need a good motor and pipe. thanks

I found that any novarossi based motor are easy to tune. I have a .21 sirio motor and it took me awaile to get a tune ( depending on weather conditions, etc..... ). I just broke in my novarossi P5 motor and it hits hard on the bottom end. Haven't reached top yet cause I'm only on my 6th tank. I should be able to hit top end today (at my local track). I hear alot of guys say the P5 doesn't have any top end ? I have a buddy of mine whole races on a huge rack in southern calif, and he's P5 it pretty quick on the top. He changed out his clutch bell to a 15 tooth bell. Its funny, he's still getting good torque coming out of sweepers  . With HP rated to be at 2.60, RPM at 31K, 5 ports, stroke at 16.80mm, and bore at 16.26mm, it sounds like the novarossi P5 motor is a " all around motor ". Anyways, i'll let you guys know what happens today.

very nice, the P5 is definatly a must on my to buy list, now... how to get that money, thats why i want to buy a used one.. anyone?

not sure about the nova P5 but I got my Rex P5 on E-Bay for like 240.00 not a bad price. I think it was a guy called PDLRacing. Thanks FlyinRazorback I will have to try one of the other pipes and see how it works. I got the 063 because of the short tight track but I will give one of the others a shot.

Common misconception with the P5 is that it doesn't have any top-end, probably due to it being a long-stroke engine and long-strokes are known for being bottom end engines. The P5 in fact does make alot of topend, but usually not until you get a gallon or so through it. Not quite as much top as the WS7II's but close enough. Besides, it's the torque and low-down power that helps win races, not the cars that win on the straights.

Also, P5's are getting harder to get. If you can get one now under $275, go ahead and snatch it up. At the moment, Trinity and Novarossi are no longer together and there is not an importer for Novarossi. The dollar is doing horrribly against the euro and prices for the P5's (Top, Nova, or Rex) are rising.

Well after driving it the other day I can also say that even with a 063 the P5 has good top end! I have been told the bottom end was good so I didn't expect the speed at the top. Now I need tto learn to drive again!

The sesion is over. I had a great time with my P5 novarossi motor. I ran 30% with a 14 tooth clutch bell. Lots of bottom end and mid range. The top is getting faster and faster the more I run this motor. Like what somebody said, after one gallon, the engine will come alive on the top which I truly believe. I also used a 086 pipe for the top.

Well, i got a WS7II in my buggy.. and i have never had a tuning problem.. this motor holds a tune very well.. runs very fast.. i do think the P5 has better bottom end.. judging from my buddy's car.. nothing that a little clutch work wouldnt help.. i drilled the shoes.. and put 1.1's on it.. now i got too much.. like a light switch.. i am gonna try non drilled with 1.0 springs.. see if that helps..
