ok my brothers friend has a 2001 yz250 he is selling cause he does not know how to work on them it fires up and idles great you can rev it up but when you put it in gear and let the clutch out putting a load on it wants to shut off pull the clutch in and it keeps running any help would be great thanks Tim

You sure it's in the gear you think it's in and not a taller one? Will the bike roll easily when in neutral?

yeah it rolls fine and yeah i am sure it is in first gear

What's it do if you throw it in second gear with the engine off and clutch out and have someone push a guy on it? Does the engine turn over or does it seem to bind up?

The only time I had an issue like what your describing, I cracked the bottom of the trans case and all the oil drained out, which in turn melted the trans in short order. Engine would run, but couldn't drive it. It was an old yamaha 175 2 cycle.
