I had a hunch it was my tx/rx combo but wasn't sure. But would that cause reverse cut outs?

Poor signal and interference can cause your rig to do all kinds of weird things, and it does not get any worse then 27mhz AM, A great way to get into a 2.4ghz radio is with the Spectrum DX3e, they go for a $100 and it has 3 position 3rd channel so you could add dig to your crawler later on if you wanted too.
