Me and my Friend are thinking of building a go-cart, I will be mostly offroad but some on road. Have any of you ever built one? We are thinking of useing a 16 HP motor should that do... Or will it be over kill? We would also like to add shocks but we are doing a single axle in the back. so How could we add shocks?

Thanks

Also if you have any tips please post

:OMG: 16HP OHH MY GOD!!! well for off road I guess that might be ok but on road be careful. There is a Go cart race center by my house and well they have like 16hp I think and well they give it throttle and the chassis flexes so ya I guess so.

16HP will be fun to drive, but you better know how to weld. Most go carts go from 5hp to 16hp, but those are professionally built. with a 5hp engine, you can go around 30mph on a street. My son and I have a 5hp Yerf dog, and it carries both of us at 240 lbs at that speed.

Check out Kartworld they have everything you'll need.

all the off road ones are like 10HP other than the "VERY RUGGED TERRAIN" ones ther like 18HP. but hey man nothing like lots of horses you might get the tires to spin.

i got a 9 hp..its nice...about 10'' of ground clearance ...it was on/off road tell the cop told me (twice) that i couldnt drive it on the road anymore...so now its backyard and woods bashing....its a lotta work to keep it running good, but its pretty rugged...i can almost drive now so if you want it tell me ill sell it

16 hp is usually weak for a serious off road go cart and if u do that might as well go all the way get something made out of seel that is really heavy and drop in a 25 hp I've driven one with an 8 hp and couldnt break twenty but then again it was designed to have 80 hp which is nuts

lol so 16hp is weak we will be driving trails we will be driving over little sticks and leafs.... do you think that 16HP is weak for what we are doing?

Niice 16hp..Thats not over kill.I'm doing overkill.I need tips to.But as soon as i start to build mine i might need some tips.If you want a website about go-kart things theres always www.badlandbuggy.com theres blueprints for different kinds of buggies and such on there.

16 HP will not be weak. Normal kids go-carts like Tiger carts, use 5-6 hp Briggs or Techumseh engines, and work for fun OK. I used to build modified 5 hp Briggs engines for cart racing. With a cam, port mods and a motorcycle carb, they make 8 to 10 hp and move a cart well.

One problem with that 16 hp engine is it will be much heavier than a normal 5 hp. You will need to stengthen the frame a lot.

well if you want one for off orad you want torque, not speed right, so just gear it right and with about any engine youll be good-- o and btw never try to go of bmx ramps...bruised tail bone, i couldnt sit down right for a week:stupid:

lol THanks guys, We hae changed are mind on what we are going to make instead of making 1 go-cart, we are making 2 barstool go-carts. Barstoolracing.com it will be cheaper plus we will have are own

If you decided to make a gocart go get a wrecked 125 dirtbike and take the motor and transmission of of it and put it on the gocart. It would be cool to have a gocart wint a clutch and a 6 speed.Just make sure you make it long so you dont flip it.

bar stoll....hey i thought about those...but my parents didnt really like the idea and personally i can't say i really blame them....it looks sooooo freking crazy....but good luck man

my uncle and his friends put a drag bike engine on a go cart one time....let me enlighten u on the engine.....KZ1000 4cycle 4stroke, ITBs, large carbs, HC pistons, and such....on a drag bike this engine could run a 6.50 easily in the 1/8

they put that on a go cart....geeze ...i can barely keep mine going straight at about 35...but then again being 15 i may have bent a couple parts on me and it .....haha
THAT WOULD BE FREAKING AWESOME THOUGH

the ones they sell around here the reall off road ones have forward reverse nuetral and have between a 20-30 hp motor on them all camoed out wuith head lights and working tail/brake lights, about a foot in a half ground clearance...

these baby go for around 3000-4000 bones

would love one of those for hunting

The scariest thing I've seen put on a go-kart is a Suzuki Hayabusa engine..That would be fun..
