I'm looking to replace my Hobbico sub-C cell glow ignitor. I'm sick of the low cell cpacity and the inability to be charged in the field.

I'm looking at glow ignitor clips that use a 1.5V hobby battery or a power panel. Here's an example of one made my Ofna.

I'm thinking of powering it with 6 C cell NiCads wired in parallel. If I do this, can I still charge them with a peak charger?

What kinds of glow ignitors do you use?

Chris uses one similar to this, that he plugs into a larger battery. Man the thing is awesome! I plan on getting on too.

I think we I use a hobbico and a towerhobbies one...those are the ones with batteries that you charge...i like it if they're metered.

I do have one that hooks up to my OFNA starter box that came with it. I like that one...it never really goes dead.

I personally use the thunder tiger one that came with my rig. It actually lasted a LONG time. After everyone elses "Super heat" from duratrax? goes dead, they come hunting me down. I leave mine on charge for 16 hours AFTER it is dead, and the last time I did that was.... hmm... last month I think.

NiCD is wierd. They don't like being shortcharged at ALL. HEre's the secret, if a NiCD battery hasn't been shortcharged much, the cell will be fine. Just run it dead on an old plug, then charge the thing for twice what the manual said to. I can pretty much assure you that your igniter will last somewhat longer. They may not last forever, but like I said, mine's lasted a LONG time, 1 gallon for me alone.

One more tip, don't leave the glow igniter on the plug for more than about 15 seconds :D

I use a Dynamite....stays charged for a surprisingly long time...but probably not as long as that...I'm sorry but...wouldnt it be weird carring around two things just to ignite the glo plug?

I use the hot shot 2 It pulls double duty for my maxx and my xxx-nt and seems to work just fine

I use the Dynamite locking metered one. I also always carry two fully charged sub c batteries with me. It works well for me, I have no complaints at all.

I use the kwik Start by Dubro lasts a long time..... I was trying to get a car started for a friend took me two plus hours of the ignitor on the head to get it started it only died once....

Hobbico 1.5v hobby cell

DuBro clip.

Works better than anything else I've used. There is a reason that this setup is the only one the LHS uses. Yeah, they will sell you any one you want. But I opted for what they use behind the counter. Lasts me more than a whole season too!

I have tried both ways,
I prefer the same setup as NC Nitro. You have a meter to show the condition of your battery and your glow-plug.

The other reason is kind of funny but here goes....

Chris, How many times will you admit to dragging your battery down the road? :jet:

Like I said, I prefer the locking metered Dynamite and an extra battery for it. It also fits in my pocket.

Is that a battery in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?

Hahahah well if you had a 1.5 v in your pocket then MAN all the power too ya! lol

And Eddy, I will only admit to once!

Just hope it's not powering anything other than a glow igniter... :D

DarthRacer,
ironically, your setup sounds the best. Strap some NiCads together and go.

Would 6 c cell NiCads be any less of a pain as opposed to the normal sub c batteries?

By the way, where can I buy the OFNA glow ignitor clips in that pic?

I use the one on my starter box, no need to worry about it. I also have a Duratrax ignitor, I like the twist on idea and the affordable price.

I use the metered dynamite starter, but am intrigued by the battery one that has been mentioned...especially as a back-up.

Chris - The LHS is exactly the reason I'm going to switch to that setup - it is what they use.

NoviceRob - I pulled that pic from TowerHobbies.
