glow plug igniter question

why would you want to do this? If it still makes the glow plug ignite brite then keep using it! I only charge mine when I take a DMM to check the voltage. If it reads lower then1 volt it will have problems making your engine start. I checked mine when it was low and it was around 850 mA. The Voltage is supposed to be 1.5 VDC. What I am saying if it works at the moment why worry.

Sounds like you're concerned because your igniter cell is a Nicd and without fully discharging a Nicd, it will develop a memory and shortly thereafter die. To get long life from a Nicd cell it should be fully discharged before the next charge. I know, I know....most of us would never fully discharge an ignitor in one day of use. But we slap it back on the charger as soon as we get home.

You could make one using a standard 'brake light bulb' with two wires coming off of it. Connect the wires to the cell directly or connect them to the igniter tip/barrel and discharge it that way.

Or.......replace that Nicd cell with a Nimh cell. They have no memory, and don't mind if you use it a little, then re-charge, use it alot, re-charge, or whatever. Nimh's are much more forgiving when it comes to charge/dis-charge cycles.

how can you tell if your cell is a NiMh or NiCd

mine just says its a 1800mAh glow igniter

There is a very easy way of discharging a glow igniter, especially if it locks on to the plug. Buy or remove from a flashlight the small bulb, stick it in the end of the igniter and wait till the bulb goes out, now your igniter is discharged.
