Futaba Magnum Junior battery replacement

I got an old Futaba radio from a swap meet and was wondering what battery to replace it with?

They used 8 AA batteries, so 12V max, but if going lipo a 3s should work.

You are stuck with AA size batteries with that molded compartment. Right?
There are 3.7v Li-ion AA size cells out there though but would require a few "dummy" cells to make things work.
Me, I'd just use normal everyday alkaline cells.
