At 37, I have finally bought what could be called a semi serious RC car. Having a toddler and another on the way, I had to stop staring at anything Traxxas, and bought an Austarhobby AXX6 instead. It is to the the Traxxas as Jaecoo is to Range Rover :p
My questions start here: Does anyone know if the all the aftermarket rods and rod ends on Ebay and Amazon, for the trx4, are compatible with this (actually rather good) Chinese knock off? The AXX6 has plastic rod ends and a few times now the metal rods have pulled out during higher speed turns.
I'm also looking to upgrade to brushless at some point... are any of the motors with built in ESC's good? I sort of get the feeling they'd run hotter than a separate motor/ESC combo... but obviously take up less space and need less wiring.

Any advice for a first time RC enthusiast will also be greatly appreciated!

Cheers,
Matt.

That thing is sick!

I'm not sure about the rod end question, but there will be something else out there that works. Do you know what size hardware are running through the pivot balls? Also the diameter, width, and offset of the ball would need to be known if you for sure want to get the right size. Other than that it may just be experimenting. Best bet would be to take one into the LHS and match it up to whatever they have.

The hobbywing Fusion SE's are great combos. As long at you're runnin a 36xx/5xx motor can then it should fit just fine.

On amazon the RCLions links were the best quality on average for cheap brands. Or buy some pack of traxxas rod ends and use them. The Amazon links and rod ends come as a kit. I use several. When it's generic sometimes they're crappy. But rarely. 20 bucks a set.
M4 revo rod ends is what I buy from Traxxas when I'm building. They are expensive. And RPM still makes their rod ends. Which cost a lot.

Thanks for all the info guys! Have ordered some alloy rod ends off amazon, gonna knock up some stainless steel rods at work to go with them.
Looked into the Fusion SE online, looks like a decent price, hinted to the missus about possible Christmas present so will see what santa brings ;)
Have added a few extra visual bits... bonnet plate and roof rack accessories, metal front and rear bumper... what I have found is that many of the 1/10 scale defender accessories online are slightly out for the Austar... not so much that they outright don't fit, but enough that they need some tweeking or have small overhangs Etc... except for light guards! I got some front and rear light guards and neither fit, not even with some jiggery poker, so I think I'll be getting my friend to 3d print some for me along with a sturdy spare wheel carrier.
