hey all howz it going

just wanted to share my great fathers day gift with everyone. my wife and daughter got me the axial ax10 crawler kit  . how great is that. ill post pics up as soon as i get done building it. i have one question though.

whats the best motor for it? iam not gonna be competing iam just gonna be playing with it.

For ease of use I reccomend the Novak goat brushless setup. The Novak fifty-five crawler setup is also a really nice setup, but the Novak goat brushless setup is A LOT nicer. I've helped two guys build their crawlers, and both guys went with the novak brushed setup at first, and now they both wish they would have spend a lil extra money to buy the brushless system, because they're going to want it anyway and that's money down the drain.

I CAN'T STRESS THE NEXT PARAGRAPH ENOUGH!!
You need to order one of these lower COG battery and servo trays right now. On the axial, the only major problem keeping it from being a decent crawler right out of the box is the battery setup. With a crawler, you need the weight as low as possible and close to the axles, which keeps the center of gravity low. On the axial, they have the battery, which is the heaviest component on the truck, as the highest component on the truck, which is a VERY bad combination.

You have two choices. I run this one. http://eastendmachining.com/axsclowcgbap.html

and I use a LiPo like this http://maxamps.com/proddetail.php?prod=Lipo-1100-74-Pack&cat=82

The other choice is using these two components, if you want to use nimh instead of LiPo. I HIGHLY reccomend LiPo, as the batteries you'll need only cost like 20 bucks in LiPo anyway.

With the Novak Goat brushless system and a 2000 mah LiPo battery, I'm getting somewhere close to 2 hours of run time on one battery. The power and torque is amazing, and the wheelspeed is incredible.

Do you happen to have a mamba max ESC for any of your other RC's? If you have one already, I can tell you of some other options that youd be cheaper but just as good IF you already have the mamba ESC.

For your servo, a HiTec 645MG will be plenty to get you started, and can be had for about $25 shipped. I reccomend buying this servo and applying the money that you save towards a brushless setup.

Check out what Joe at www.eastendmachining.com has to offer. He offer special discounts to RCNT members, and he has THE BEST customer service that I've found in the industry. It's been a pleasure working with him, and he always goes out of his way to give me discounts and include special lil bonus parts in each order. In fact, I just bought my second ax-10 kit from him.

+100 on the lipo. I have always feared it due to the stories of people blowing them up on charge an all that BS but it has made my crawler experience 10x better. I have the brushed setup Charlie was talking about:
http://teamnovak.com/products/esc/55_turn_rooster_combo/index.html
and i have had no problems with it. Congradulations on your new toy, take your time with the build, some of those parts are a pain in the @$$, and look on youtube for a tutorial on the beadlock rims, (unless you have done em b4).

I'm not familiar with the lipo but definatly relocate the batteries, i have mine relocated as well but when they went dead yesterday i strapped one to the intended spot on top and it tipped over off just barely side hilling it, over and over, made it very un fun.

Since lipo weighs practicly nothing, i just put mine on the rear axle when i crawl. Hold it on there with a little velcro so i can take it off when i charge it.

and the body covers it very well, so i dont have to worry about roll overs, but when running topless i modified a little roll bar to fit over the battery.

I would also recomend stopping by your LHS to pick up some weights. The ones i use are 1/4 oz weights all attached with double sided tape. I put two layers of these in each front wheel, and one layer inside the rear wheeels. makes all the difference in the world.

When you really want to set up your crawler to crawl at it's full potential, you want more weight over the front end and less weight on the back end. It's easy to mount the battery on the fron axle, and it's definitely worth it. I think it's one of the most important mods that you can perform.

what else can we use to weight the wheels? my LHS doesn't sell anything for crawlers, thats if the weights are for crawlers but their also along ways away from me.

You can go to your local tire shop & get self adhesive weights there. They have them in 1/4 oz. squares,You can stick them to inside of the wheels.

Yeap you can get them at the tire stores, but the hobby shops usually have them for other purposes, like planes and stuff, because we have a small shop but they carry dubro stick on weights. Associated also makes them. Slowngree, you can order them from ebay for just about nothing.

wow thanks alot guys for all the helpfull info.

yes the beadlocks are a total pain in the a$$. my wife got that lovely chore lol

what exactly do i need to convert the truck to lipo?

do i need to have a brushless setup?

iam thinking about getting the integy 55t motor.

is it any good?

again thanks alot guys

The integy 55 turn motor is a decent motor. The mamba 25 ESC's and the sidewinder ESC's work good with that setup, and you can run LiPo, and you can use the castle link to program things like throttle curve and drag brake. A good ESC such as the ones listed, the mamba max, or the rooster crawler is mandatory. There are some other options too, such as a quark.
