Well, i would like to spend quality time with my dad. I will be able to drive soon so i came up with the idea of building a car. My dad later found out about "kit cars" and he says you get a big box of parts and you put it all together. i was wondering if any one has ever heard of them and are there any motorcycle kits?

i've never seen a motorcycle kit, but now-a-days it wouldn't surprise me if there a kit. I've seen and actually looked into getting a kit car a few years back. depending on the model you get, you need to provide the base chassis with all the working drive line components. a few of the more common chassis are based of VW bugs, K-ghia's or the pontiac Fiero. Depending on how much you want to spend you can go from cobra look-a-like to a ferrari look-a-like. The only piece of advice i can give you is research the kit very well and stay away from the ones that require you to stretch the chassis. Back when i loooked at them those models severely compromised the chassis strength.

cool. thanks. i was looking on google at car kits but all of them seem to be premade. I'm gunna have to do alot more research.

Burgers8,

My father is a mechanic and he's actually building a kit car for a customer of his. The kit is from Total Performance it's a T Bucket hot rod. I don't know the exact price but I can tell you it's going to be in the range of 40-50k once they are all said in done with this bad boy.

The guy is pretty well off and has always wanted a T Bucket so he's getting just about anything "premium" there is to offer. If they are still working on it when I go home next I'll try to remember to get some pictures.

Check out the Migi. (pronounced Mee' jee) I'm not sure of the spelling, that might be right, but it's based on the '53 MG-TD. I used to have the actual '53, but saw a kit version and it was a real beauty. This is a country roadster at its' best.

I don't know if this qualifies as a true kit car but I have always wanted to build a Factory Five Type 65 Coupe. They also have other kits for sale.

The old shelby cobra is a popular kit, if done right they look good. I've seen a few lambo kits as well, they look good enough to fool the passer by but most car enthusiasts pick em out right off, especially when you hear the Chevy 350! LOL

ditto on what Woodie said.

when i looked at mine the turnkey product for a ferrari look-a-like was near 35k. granted that was back in 02 but still big bucks when you really think about. have you considered a restoration project? if your looking for father/son time, that might be the ticket and depending on what you buy maybe cheaper.

another thing, talk to your insurance agent. i can't remember the exact reason why, but i remember my agent telling me that insurance for the car would be hard to get and expensive

Insurance is an issue.
Due to the fact that they are a KIT, there are no safety limitations on the builder.
I believe all you need is lights and seat belts.

Yes! Dom, you took the thought right out of my head. That IS the kit to have right there. My wife likes the much more common Cobra, but I LOVE the coupe. That is just totally sweet! Factory Five has a great reputation. They say you don't have to be a gearhead to put one of these together but I don't know.. I would be concerned that I would be in over my head.

I'm hoping that the next house we live in will have a nice 3 or four car garage so I can build one of the coupes in 10 years. I would imagine it would cost a couple grand in tools to get started but it can't be THAT much different than putting together a nitro RC kit. lol

yeah, if you're not a tech, you're probably gonna need to drop some good coin on tools.. but man, what a project.. what's the donor car for the coupe? I know the donor for the Cobra is a fox body mustang. get a cheapy for like 3G's, as long as the rear end and other important components are in good shape. I bet a Joe Schmoe could build a FF5 Cobra for less than 20 large as long as you don't go crazy with it. Cuz you know I'd have to go crazy with it... big F'n crate motor... (Tim Allen grunts)

It's similar for the coupe. According to their website the donor car is any 87-93 Mustang for the base kit. With the complete kit all one needs is the engine/tranny, wheels/tires, and paint. Big F'n crate motor? HELL YA! (more grunting)

Oh yeah...I like it.....then you just need a lot of hot girl to follow it where ever you go.....oh wait a second we were talking about cars right...sorry my bad....how my mind wanders......

sweet. i looked at the coupe on that website too. there a little more pricey then i was hoping. any way to get em under like 7grand? and we have looked into a restoration prodject. the only problem there is finding the parts you need, but thats probablly what were gunna end up doing.

thanks woody i would like to see pics if its not to much trouble.

thanks guys.

p.s. i really want a stick shift for my first car. only way to go says my dad.

They are also making a lot of "tribute cars" that are reproductions of the originals. I saw on TV that they built a '69 Camaro convertible. I also saw them build a '57 Chevy. There also parts out for the '67 Corvette Stingray Split-window coupe.

as of right now we are looking for a cool car to restore. the kit cars are to expensive.

What kind of car should try to get?

There also parts out for the '67 Corvette Stingray Split-window coupe.

No such thing as a 67 split window coupe. The only year for a split window coupe Sting Ray was 1963, which also was the first year for the Sting Ray. The last year of the true Sting Ray was 1967, after 67 the two word Sting Ray was combined into the more popular Stingray which was introduced 1968. And 1976 was the last year for the Stingray Corvettes.
